[44151] "King City Democrat [King City, MO], 1 November 1912," p. 8: "John Vermillion Andrews was born in Schenectaday, New York, May 17, 1818, died in King City, Mo., October 27, 1912. He had thus lived more than ninety-four years. On the 27th of February, 1843, he was united in marriage with Aurilla Saxton who was his faithful and loving companion for sixty-seven years. Eight children blessed their home, five of whom are yet living. The surviving children are, F. M. Andrews, St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. J. J. Nelson, Amhurst, Wisconsin, Mrs. E. E. Gordon, Carthage, Mo., Mrs. C. G. Seamans, Savannah, Mo., and Mrs. W. E. Agee, of King Citv, at whose home kind hands ministered to the father during his illness and did all for him that love could do. In the year 1867 he moved wifh his family to Andrew county, Missouri where he lived a respected and honored citizen until a few weeks ago, when he moved to King City. About forty years ago Brother Andrews obeyed tho gospel of Jesus Christ and united with the Christian church at Whitesville and for many years was an elder of that church. He was a faithful member of this congregation when the end came. He lived a quiet and useful life. He was cheerful, hopeful and contented, even when the infirmaties of age confined him to his room. Aside from the sadness of parting, shall we not be glad because the aged pilgrim has reached home? Death has no sting and the grave no fears for such as he. For we believe he could truly say, 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith, henceforth there, is laid up for me crown of righteousness.'"

[22408] "Also known as SVATÝ VÁCLAV and Saint Wenceslas, he was raised a Christian by his grandmother St. Ludmila, but his ambitious mother, Drahomíra (Dragomir), a pagan, had her murdered and acted as regent herself, until Wenceslas came of age in 924 or 925. Her court intrigues and the wishes of the people to end the conflicts between Christian and non-Christian factions in Bohemia led Wenceslas to take the reins of government. As duke he was pious, reportedly taking the vow of virginity, and encouraged the work of German missionary priests in the Christianization of Bohemia. His zeal in spreading Christianity, however, antagonized his non-Christian opponents. Faced with German invasions in 929, Wenceslas submitted to the German king Henry I the Fowler. His submission provoked some of the nobles to conspire against him, and they prompted his younger brother, Boleslav (Boleslaus), to murder him. Waylaid by Boleslav en route to mass, Wenceslas was killed at the church door. Frightened by the reports of miracles occurring at Wenceslas' tomb, Boleslav had his remains transferred in 932 to the Church of St. Vitus, Prague, which became a great pilgrimage site during the medieval period. Wenceslas was regarded as Bohemia's patron saint almost immediately after his assassination. His virtues are sung in the Christmas carol (19th century) 'Good King Wenceslas.'" - http://nygaard.50g.com/files/3475.htm (in 2003)

[7284] A sketch of his family is in "Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley ..." (Chambersburg, PA: Runk & Co., 1897). George was a private in the PA Volunteers during the War Between the States - his discharge papers state he is 23 years old, 5'11" tall, has a light complexion, blue eyes, and is a carpenter. "The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, PA], 20 January 1926," p. 3: "George S. Briner, Esq., a veteran of the Civil War and Register and Recorder of Perry county for two terms, died at his home in Carlisle Saturday afternoon, at the age of 85 years. The news of his death was received in Perry county with sincere sorrow. The deceased was a son of George and Magdalene (Seager) Briner and was born at Mt. Pleasant, in Jackson township, July 7, 1841. When a young man he learned the carpentering trade. After the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company F, 208th Pennsylvania Volunteers, serving with honor from Sept 2, 1804, to June 2, 1865, participating in the battle of Fort Stedman andthe Siege of Petersburg. On his return home he engaged in farming and carpentering. On Dec. 19, 18_0, while at work building the barn of Samuel A. Johnston he fell from the roof, sustaining a compound fracture of the left leg, which left him a cripple for life. Mr. Briner was elected Register and Recorder of Perry county in 1875 on the Democratic ticket and was reelected in 1878. At the expiration of his term of office he engaged in the insurance business with his brother Daniel, first in Bloomfield and then in Newport. For many years he had been living in Carlisle, where he was an elder of St. Paul's Lutheran church. He was a man of high character and was widely known and respected. George S. Briner was married January 17, 1876, to Susan B., daughter of William and Rebecca (Balthaser) Moose. Mrs. Briner died in 1901. The surviving children are George M. and J. Frank Briner, Carlisle; W. Grier Briner, Narberth; Charles S. Briner, Detroit, Mich., and Miss Mary, at home. One sister, Mrs. Hannah M. Brown, of near Newville, is also living. The funeral was held yesterday with burial at Blain."

[2922] William owned and operated a service garage adjacent to their residence on the Akron-Canton Road a short distance from the homestead on which he was born. "The Akron Evening Times, 11 October 1920," p. 1: "William Briner, 38, Springfield rd., was found dead by his family this morning, a revolver bullet wound in his head. Briner, according to sheriffs deputies, committed suicide rather than be committed to the county jail on a charge of lunacy. Sheriff Pat Hutchinson Saturday received a report that Briner was demented, and went to the Springfield road home to take him in custody. A search of the house and vicinity failed to reveal Briner, who is thot to have been hiding. Sunday, Briner's twenty-year-old son came to the county Jail and asked the sheriff not to come for his father that day; that Briner would surrender himself Monday. This morning he was found dead. Sheriff's deputies said that, so far as is known, Briner has not previously been held on a lunacy charge. The report received Saturday was that he had been drinking and was exhibiting symptoms of insanity, the sheriff says. The dead man is survived by a wife and a son."

[2284] Alphonso VI was "a sovereign of strong personal character" {-Encycl. Brit., 1956, 1:687} He was king of Leon, 1065-1109, and of Castile, 1072-1109 - see comments under his brother, Sancho II. He captured Toledo, ancient capital of the Visigoths, from the Moors, 1085 - Toledo was the Moorish capital of Iberia. This expanded his rule to the Tagus River and the center of the Iberian peninsula. He welcomed the Cluniac monks and pressed for adoption of the Roman liturgy instead of the Mozarabic.
