Her father and mother are both descended from Magna Carta Sureties and from Charlemagne, according to "Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth-Century Colonists - Second Edition," David Faris (Boston: NEHGS, 1999), p. 15, which states that Joan was reported to be "a fool and an idiot from birth" and that her mother's father is Thomas Brounflete, Knight, of Londesborough and Weighton, Yorkshire.
