[6993] "Alexius was an intelligent and victorious ruler, a true Greek of the cast of Odysseus...a great politician, manipulating international and domestic politics, as well as his subjects and enemies, with masterly skill. In a dim age he was bright, in times of frightful crisis he kept his head. His daughter Anna's biography, "The Alexiad" (Penguin, Harmondsworth, 1969), is a fascinating picture in depth." - "Who's Who in the Middle Ages," John Fines (NY: Barnes & Noble, 1995), p. 14.
