She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Penobscot; life member of the OES No 107 Penobscot, having been a past matron and member for 65 years; and a 47-year member of the Castine Gronge No. 250. Survivors include one son, Philip B. Gray and his wife Betty of Penobscot; one daughter, Pauline R. Astbury and her husband, Artie of Penobscot; one sister, Verna A. Leach of Penobscot; nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grondchildren, several cousins, nieces ond nephews,"

"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 11 May 1926, p. 11: "Penobscot - On April 29, Mrs. Ruth F. Smith passed away at her home in Penobscot after an illness of several months. Mrs. Smith waa born in Brooksville, July 24, 1853, the daughter of the late Charles and Lydla Perkins. She was married in 1873 to the late Albert M. Wardwell, who was lost at sea. One son was born to them, M. A. Wardwell, M. D., of Penobscot. Nine years later she was married to I. Newton Smith of South Hancock, by whom she had another son, Mark I. Smith of Bangor. She again left a widow and was obliged to assume the care of her two boys. . . . She is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren, one brother, Capt. C. M. Perkins, one sister Mrs. Emma Wardwell, many nephews and nieces, and a host of friends in this and surrounding towns."
