[38986] "News-Journal [Mansfield, Ohio], 23 June 1939," p. 1: "Richland county's oldest resident and only centenarian, Mrs. Mary Sackman Beasore, died last night at her home near Lucas. She was 100 years old last January. She died in the old Beasore home in which she had spent most of her married ilfe, and her funeral will be held in the Mt. Zion church which she had attended for more than 80 years. Five generations of the family had resided in the Beasore house, four of them at one time. Although suffering from the infirmities of old age, she had been ill only two weeks. Mrs. Beasore was born on Jan. 20, 1839, during the administration of President Martin Van Buren, the daughter of Henry and Susanna Ernsberger Sackman. Her father's family came to Ohio from Pennsylvania by covered wagon shortly after Richland county was laid out, sometime in the 1820's. When she was five months old her father caught the fever to go west, and in a covered wagon she was moved to Missouri where her father cleared land and built a cabin. Here she lived until she was six years old, when the family, disillusionrd from their dream of wealth, came back to Ohio and the old home near Lucas. In the early '60's she married George Beasore, whom she had known from childhood. Three sons were born to them, all now deceased. Mrs. Beasore had a remarkable memory. When she was interviewed last January on her 100th birthday, she recalled that she was still a child in Missouri when news came that Gen. Taylor had defeated Santa Ana at Buena Vista, and that it was shortly after her marriage that the nation was upset by the assassination of President Lincoln. She recalled many incidents of her early childhood and historical events of the past century. To her Johnny Appleseed was not a legend, but a real figure who had made friends with neighbors of her parents, and whose eccentricities were frequently discussed but never laughed at by the settlers whom he had befriended. Mrs. Beasore lived in the old home which had been built by her husband's father, Daniel Beasore, during the early 1840's while she was a child in Missouri. Residing with her was a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cora Beasore, her grand-daughter, Mrs. Gaylord Mowers and husband, and two great grandchildren and their wives. Mrs. Beasore was the last of six children, her sister, Mrs. Margaret France, 92, Cincinnati, dying several months ago. Her husband died in 1894. She is survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Mowers, and George Beasore; nine gerat grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren."
