[6426] Robert, 5th Lord of Annandale, was Regent of Scotland. He forfeited the Crown of Scotland by refusing to do homage to King Edward I of England. He is called "The Competitor." In 1291 he unsuccessfully competed with John Baliol for the crown of Scotland. Cf. John Gough Nichols, ed. "The Herald and Genealogist," 8 (1874): 325-348 at 336. http://www.geocities.com/janet_ariciu/OldScottishfamilies.html offers: "Robert Bruce The Competitor 1201-1295, the descendant of a Norman on whom the lordship of Annandale had been conferred by David I, was the son of Isabella, 2nd daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon. 1255 Robert was one of the guardians of young Alexander III but his career was for many years mainly in England. He supported Henry III against Simon de Montfort and after the latters overthrow at Evesham (1265) he became governor of Carlisle, sheriff of Cumberland and in 1268, Chief Justice of the Court of Kings Bench. His first marriage was to Isobel, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Glouscester and Hereford and 2nd to Christina, daughter of Sir William de Ireby. In 1270, he went on a crusade with Edmund, the youngest son of Henry III. In 1284, he acknowledged Margaret, 'the Maid of Norway' as heiress to the Scottish throne, but on Alexander IIIs death in 1286 he rose in arms to claim the throne in virtue of an alleged declaration by Alexander II (then childless) in 1238 that he, as a male, should be preferred to the daughter of his mothers elder sister. In 1290 on the death of 'the Maid of Norway', he renewed his claim and in 1291, along with his son, swore fealty to Edward I, to whose judgment the competition for the throne was remitted. After Edward appointed Balliol as King. Bruce resigned his rights to his son Robert, who had become Earl of Carrick by his marriage c1272 to Marjory, daughter and heiress of Neil, Earl of Carrick. Carrick who lived until 1304, was the father of King Robert I, to whom he had resigned his earldom in 1292 and of Edward, King of Ireland as well as of three other sons, Thomas, Alexander and Nigel all of whom were put to death by the English." [22955] The unverified file in One World Tree on Ancestry.com in 2007 reports Abel is son of Samuel Edson and Mary Dean.
Margaretha is daughter of Johann Gilcher and Margaretta Dick. An e-mail received 12 March 2000 follows:
"Hi, just found your web notes about Margarethe GILCHER (1831-1921) born in Oberweiler im Tal, Germany, a little village in the Essweiler valley between Kusel, Lauterecken and Kaiserslautern, about 80 miles from Frankfurt. If you are interested in getting her Gilcher ancestors back into the 16th century, I can provide you with those data. Researching my personal Gilcher ancestors, I made a relativeley complete listing of all the Gilcher families of Western Palatinate.
"By the way, her uncle Johann Jacob Gilcher, born July 1805, married to Phebe Dick emigrated in 1833 already, near Sandusky, OH.
"Her aunt, Maria Elisabeth Gilcher, born June 1809, married to a Peter WENZ, born in 1798, must have emigrated, too; one source says the couple died in PA. For the sake of completion of my data, I personally would be interested in knowing when and where Margarethe Gilcher's parents, Johann Peter Gilcher and his wife Margarethe Dick from Erdesbach, died. He was born Nov.18, 1800 in Horschbach, she was born in 1801, they married Dec.12,1826 in Erdesbach. He was a linnenweaver. Do you have these burial data? Or other Gilcher data, e.g. of Margarethe Gilcher's aunts and uncles in/near Sandusky? Possibly there were more emigrations of the six brothers and sisters of Margarethe Gilcher?"
In response to a request for her ancestry, he offered (3/00): "Here are the data about Margarethe Gilcher's family and direct Gilcher ancestors:

"The family name of Gilcher, before 1800 "Guelcher", derives from the town of
"Juelich" a few hundred miles down the Rhine and means "a person from the town
or county of Juelich". First written mention in the Palatinate in 1494:
"Guelcher's Class"(= Claus = Clos = Niclas = Nickel) in Weinsheim/Worms,
indicated as coming from Speyer on the Rhine. I suppose that the Guelcher
ancestors left Juelich and moved up the Rhine to the larger town of Speyer in
the late 13th/early 14th century, when family names were first given. In the
second half of the 15th century they started moving westward and by around 1550
had reached Western Palatinate, where most of the descendants live today. But a
large number of them has also made it to the USA."
