John was baptised 23 Dec 1583 at Hillmorton, Warwickshire, and sailed from Bristol 1 Dec 1630 on the "Lyon" with his wife and 5 children; they arrived at Nantasket 5 Feb 1631 and the next day anchored at Boston where on 18 April 1631 he took the oath of Freeman. He was one of those appointed 7 Nov 1632 by the General Court to set down the bounds between Roxbury and Dorchester, Mass. In 1633 he moved to Ipswich, Mass., the colony newly founded by John Winthrop, where he had several grants of land. His house was close to the river at the entrance to Jeffries Neck on present-day East Street, and he farmed there. John served as a Deputy to the session of the General Court held in Boston 25 May 1636 and held many town offices, etc. as a leading man of Ipswich.{-"Jacob Perkins of Wells, Maine and His Descendants," by Thomas A. Perkins, Haverhill, Mass.: Record Pub. Co., 1947, p.2; cf. "The Perkins Family History," J. Montgomery Seaver.} John's will dated 28 March 1654 was proved in Sept 1654. John's account of the trip is on microform in the LDS Family History Center:
"Upon the 5 of February arrived here Mr. Peirce [sic] with the shipp Lyon of Bristow [sic] the first of December before. "Hee had a stormy passage hether, and lost one of his daylors not farr from our shore who in a tempest, having helped to take in the spirit saile, lost his hold as hee was comeigne downe, and fell into the sea, where after long swimming, he was drowned, to the great folour of those in the shipp, who beheld so lamentable a spectacle, without being able to minister help to him.
"The sea was soe high and the shipp drove so fast before the wind, though her sailes were taken down. "And by the reports of those who came hether in this shipp to abide with us (which were about 26) that those who went discontentedly from us last yeare, have raised many false and scandalous reports against us." [there follows a list of the passengers of the Lyon including:
John Perkins, aged 47.
Judith Perkins, his wife, aged 42.
John Perkins, Jr., son of John and Judith, aged 22.
Elizabeth Perkins, daughter of John and Judith, aged 20.
Mary Perkins, daughter of John and Judith, aged 15.
Ann Perkins, daughter of John and Judith, aged 13.
Thomas Perkins, son of John and Judith, aged 9.
Jacob Perkins, son of John and Judith, aged 3.]
The microform record notes in typescript:: "The ship Lyon had been one of the ten ships that brought the 700 members of the Massachusetts Bay Colony under John Winthrop, Jr. "It is not commonly known that an advance party had preceeded to prepare for the coming of the above party. The advance party had met with much misfortune uprepared for above arrival so the colony was immediately short of supplies.
"The Lyon carried only 26 passengers as it was loaded with 200 tons of food and other supplies that saved the colony from starvation." The passenger list included Roger Williams, famous pastor who opposed the Puritans and established Rhode Island.
John's will, 28 March 1654, names his eldest son, John (and John's sons John and Abraham), son Thomas (and John, son of Thomas), daughters Elizabeth Sargent, Mary Bradbury, and Lydia Bennitt, grandchild Thomas Bradbury, son Jacob Perkins and wife Judith.
