[8339] Elizabeth Comyn m. a Gilbert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, b. 1244, d. bef. Oct. 13, 1307, son of Gilbert de Umfraville and Maud, dau. of Malcolm, Earl of Angus - per "Ancestral Roots..." (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 1992), p. 186. http://www.thepeerage.com/p91.htm reports "Gilbert de Umfreville, 8th Earl of Angus was born circa 1244.1 He was the son of Gilbert de Umfreville and Maud, Countess of Angus. He married Elizabeth Comyn, daughter of Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy. He died before 13 October 1307. In 1265 he joined the uprising of the Barons against the King. He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Angus [S., c. 1115] circa June 1267. In 1281 he was one of the Nobles who swore to ratify the marriage of Margaret of Scotland to Eric, King of Norway. He gained the title of 1st Earl of Angus [England] on 28 June 1283. He held the office of Governor of Dundee, Forfar Castle and Angus in 1291. In 1291 he refused to surrender Angus to England. He was created 1st Lord Umfreville [England] on 24 June 1295." Cf. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/families/angus_douglases.htm which reports: "The earldom passed in 1243 to GILBERT DE UMFRAVILLE, Lord of Redesdale, Prudhoe, and Harbottle in Northumberland, by his marriage to the heiress, daughter of the fifth earl of the original family. His son by the countess, who bore the same name, was governor of the castles of Dundee and Forfar, when the Regent in 1291 agreed to surrender the kingdom and its fortresses to Edward I. The conduct of Gilbert de Umfraville in this hour of trial presented a prudent contrast to the unpatriotic spirit which his brother barons displayed. He declared that, having received his castles in charge from the Scottish nation, he would not surrender them to the King of England without an obligation to indemnify him from Edward and all the claimants for the Crown. To remove his objections a letter of indemnity was signed by Edward, by the competitors, and by the guardians. On receiving this document Gilbert delivered up Dundee and Forfar to the English king. He afterwards, however, deserted the patriotic cause, and treacherously went over to the side of Edward, along with the Earl of Dunbar, immediately before the battle of Falkirk in 1298. The information which these two nobles conveyed to the English King rescued his army from a position of imminent peril. He died in 1307."

[13975] BetFoster1@aol.com offered via email 28 Sept 2003: "Katherine Howard (born 1467, Tendring, Essex, and she died 1536). Her parents: John Howard and Margaret Chedworth. She married John Bourchier on 8 November 1497 and were divorced after she gave birth to: Jane Bourchier (b. 1497 d. 1561); Mary Bourchier (b. 1500, d. ?); Christopher Bourchier, (b. 1498 - ). Her daughter Jane Bourchier married Edmund Knyvett (b. 1483). They had 12 children. Their oldest daughter Anne Bourchier Knyvett was born 1509. Anne married Richard Sayer (Sears) in 1526. He was from Colchester, Essex and My direct line. They had a son John Bourchier Sears, born 1527. Richard left England for Amsterdam because he did not agree with Henry VIII. Anne and son John left a year later. John was brought up and educated with Lamoraal Von Egmond who in later years became Count Egmond. When John grew up he married Elizabeth Hawkins in 1560 (she daughter of Sir John Hawkins). Elizabeth Hawkins and John Bourchier Sears had six children: Henry, 1563; John 1564; William 1565; Richard 1567; John Bourchier Sears, b. 1561, d. 1629 in Holland, and William Sears, born 1565 Amsterdam. When John Bourchier Sears grew up he married the granddaughter of Count Lamoraal Von Egmond: Marie Lamoraal Von Egmond and in my genealogy they called her Marie Le von Egmond. She was married to John Bourchier Sears in 1585. They had five children: Marie; John; Jane Knyvett Sears and Richard Sears (the Pilgrim). He was born in 1590 Amsterdam and died 26 August 1676. Richard married Dorothy Thacker b. 1603 (dau. of Peter Thacker) in 1632. He arrived in America in 1630. Of their 12 children, Paul Sears married Deborah Willard b. 1645. Her parents were George Willard and Dorothy Dunster (daughter of Henry Dunster, 1st Pres Harvard College). Their son, another Paul, married Mercy Freeman on 16 July 1693 Harwick Barnstable. She dau. of Thomas Freeman and Rebecca Sparrow. They had 15 children and Daniel Sears born 1710 married Mercy Snow. They had seven children of which Daniel (number 3 child) was born Yarmouth and died 1808 Ashfield, Franklin, MA. That's when the whole family went west of Massachusetts and settled in Ashfield and Buckland, MA. Paul (no. 3) married Eleanor Smith (daughter of Lemuel Smith and Lydia Stocking) at Middle Haddam, CT in 1760. They had 12 children, most born in Ashfield, Franklin, MA. Their son Stephen Taylor b.1760 (in Yarmouth) married Amee Maynard (b. 1769). and their son Ansel Taylor (b. 1795) married Betsey Sears (b. 1798). Then of course comes Lewis Henry Taylor, my great grandfather."
