Ten days before his death he went a short distance from his house to cut down a tree, it lodged, and in his efforts to dislodge it he was struck by the supporting tree or sapling, and injured so severely as to eventuate in death. He leaves a widow, nine children, thirty-seven grandchildren and many other relations to lament their loss. He was a member of the Lutheran Church for about 48 years, and exemplified in his life and death the value of true religion. Those who knew him bear testimony to his worth as a citizen, his deportment as a companion and father, and his faithfulness as a Christian."
