[55840] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 21 February 2024: "Delbert 'Del' D. Davis, 84, of Venice, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Born on March 30, 1939 in a schoolhouse in Etna, Maine to Lilly (Hudson) Davis and Daniel Denman Davis. He was fostered from young age by Millard and Audrey Smith of Newburgh, Maine. When Del was 17 years old, he joined the Army and served his country in the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged, he moved to Connecticut where he met his beautiful wife of 56 years, Anita (Galipeau), while roller skating. Del was a loving and devoted father to his and Anita's children, to many foster children, and to his grandchildren. Del was a self-described 'ol farm boy, and those roots were evident in Connecticut when he hand-dug a pond for his pet Canadian Geese, Honkie & Peeper, and also raised rabbits. Anita and him moved back up to Maine in 1986 and he happily had small farm with horses, goats, ducks, chickens, and fish in the pond. He would talk about that time in Maine being the best time of his life; a time when he 'had everything.' Del was always very industrious and owned his own side business working on small engines while he was a supervisor and mechanic at Currier Trucking. He continued to work until he was over 80 years old tending others lawns. Del leaves behind his three children, Jim Davis and his wife Denise of Bucksport, Maine, Wayne Davis of Beverly Hills, California, and adopted daughter Nancy Hamm and husband Michael of Venice, Florida, as well as his sister Effie, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many special nieces, nephews, and friends. Del was a father figure to many, and will be remembered for his wit and his willingness to help anywhere he could. He will be deeply missed by anyone who was fortunate enough to have him in their life."

[14395] "The Whitcomb family in America . . . ," Charlotte Whitcomb (Minneapolis, MN, 1904), p. 87 reports he "entered the United States Revenue Cutter service in 1819 and served on the coast of Maine at Eastport and at Portland. He was also stationed at New York City and at Oswego on Lake Ontario. For many years he commanded the Revenue Cutter at Boston. He was in command of the United States Revenue Cutter 'Morris' when Anthony Burns, a fugitive slave, was conveyed on her from Boston harbor back to the South during tremendous excitement. Capt. Whitcomb was not proud of this achievement and doubtless would not have cared to have it recorded but he was acting under orders and it is to his credit that though the task was not of his choosing he performed it faithfully. Capt. Whitcomb was in the Revenue Cutter service over forty-two years, and was distinguished for his attention to his duties, which included the assistance of vessels in distress during the winter months. He was married in 1825 to Abigail Parker Clapp of Boston, daughter of Salmi and Abigail (Munroe) Clapp, and named for Abigail Parker, mother of Abigail Munroe. She was bom January 25, 1804. After her husband's death in Boston, December 25, 1861 she passed through the lines to her son in Richmond, Va."
