He and his brothers, Hugh, and Robert with sisters, Jane and Margaret first settled in Washington Co, Pennsylvania at Buffaloe and Short Creek. In 1878, the family crossed the river into Ohio. He purchased a claim in 1879 at the Settlement of Short Creek, now Warrenton, Warren twp, Jefferson Co. OH. His will dated Sept. 29, probated Aug. 29, 1794 states he was "a farmer in the Settlement of Short Creek, west of Ohio. James' wife was Margaret Sparks who preceded him in death.
