Sanders, age 93, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 9:12 A.M. on Monday, December 9, 2019, at SKLD Healthcare, Bryan, where she was a patient. Mrs. Sanders was a 1944 graduate of Edon High School and was a receiving clerk at The Aro Corporation in Bryan for eighteen years. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bryan and Bryan American Legion Auxiliary, of which she past president, and a former member of Bryan Lioness Club. She enjoyed her crafts, playing cards and spending winters in Florida with her husband for many years. Norma E. Sanders was born on February 20, 1926, in Montpelier, Ohio, the daughter of Glen V. and Helen (Haines) Shearer. She married Richard R. Sanders on February 7, 1948, in Bryan, and he preceded her in death on March 18, 2011. Surviving are two sons, Thomas Sanders, of Bryan, and Steven (Cheryl) Sanders, of Fredericktown, Ohio; one daughter, Nancy (Samuel) Baker, of Holgate, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jason, Jamie and Adam Sanders; three step grandchildren, Stephanie, Sarah and Steven Wicks; and ten great-grandchildren, Jenna, Spencer, Ellianna, Levi and Anna Sanders, Bayli, Eric, Aden and Zebrianne Sanders and Gage Wicks. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Marian and Marjorie Shearer and Marguerite McNamee."

Ellsworth - Herbert Trafton Silsby, II died peacefully at his home on Dec. 29, 2013 surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. He was born in Brewer, on February 8, 1925 to Myrle Coombs Silsby and William S. Silsby, Sr. He lived in Aurora, until 1935 when the family moved to Ellsworth where his father would form the law firm of Clarke & Silsby. Herb attended Ellsworth High School and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1943. While his service in the U.S. Army was brief it was something of which he was very proud. In 1947 Herb graduated from Bowdoin College where he was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. He attended Boston University Law School but never graduated because he passed the bar at the end of his second year and was admitted to practice in 1949. In 1950, Herb married Ruth Blaisdell who was literally the girl next door. Throughout his 88 years Herb distinguished himself as a lawyer, jurist, civic leader, Maine and local historian and author. His legal career began as a member of the law firm of Silsby & Silsby in 1949. He continued with the firm until 1977 practicing with his father and brother William S. Silsby, Jr. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association from 1964 to 1972. He served as the President of the Maine State Bar Association in 1975 and as a member of the Maine Judicial Council from 1978 to 1992. One of his many accomplishments as a lawyer was drafting and procuring the passage of a Short Form Deeds Act which made real estate transactions more affordable. Herb believed in the obligation of the legal profession to give back. In his 1991 Foreword to "One Hundred Years of Law and Justice" the history of the Maine State Bar Association which he co-authored, Herb said "The members of a profession have a moral duty, it is generally considered, to do pro bono work. The legal profession is in some respects a privileged group and in return owes society a fair contribution of time and talent." True to these words Herb lent his considerable talent and his time pro bono to many clients who couldn't pay. Herb's judicial career began as an Ellsworth Municipal Court Judge from 1951 to 1955. In 1977, Governor James Longley nominated him to the Maine Superior Court where he served until 1992 when he retired. During his 15 years as a judge, he traveled the State of Maine living in hotels and motels and returning home on the weekends. He considered it a privilege to be able to sit in courthouses around the state and get to know the lawyers, clerks and court reporters throughout Maine. Throughout his judicial tenure, he remained a modest, kind, courteous, prepared and grateful jurist who always had time to mentor a new lawyer and share stories with an experienced one. No matter what the demands of his law practice, Herb found the time to serve his church as a Sunday school superintendent and Deacon of the First Congregational Church and director of the Maine Conference of Congregational Churches; his town as a member of the Ellsworth City Council from 1967 to 1971 serving as the Chairman in 1967, Chairman of the Maine Coast Regional Health Facility from 1976 to 1977, a trustee of the Ellsworth Public Library and the Woodlawn Museum, a Director of the Union Trust Company of Ellsworth from 1967 to 1977 and his political party as Chairman of the Maine Young Republican Clubs from 1953 to 1957. Herb was a member of the Ellsworth Rotary Club for 50 years and served as club secretary and co-chairman of the Rotary District Conference Committee in 1962. He was honored twice by the Rotary with a Paul Harris Fellow award for his commitment to the Ellsworth Club and his ongoing support to the Rotary Foundation. Herb was a member of the Ellsworth Junior Chamber of Commerce and was named Jaycee of the year from 1958 to 1959 and Ellsworth Citizen of the Year in 1993. He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shrine. While law was his profession and service to his community his responsibility, history and writing were his avocations. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations and served as Vice-President from 2000-2004. He was President of the Hancock County Historical Society from 1966-1972 and President of the Maine Historical Society from 1973 to 1976. He served as a Director of the Northeast Folklore Society in 1964 and as a Trustee of the Maine League of Historical Societies and Museums from 1967 to 1977. In 1977 he was elected as a member of the prestigious American Antiquarian Society. Herb's expertise on State and local history was renowned. He lectured at the Ellsworth Public Library, the Woodlawn Museum, Ellsworth Adult Education programs and various other groups and societies throughout downeast Maine. In 1989 he delivered a speech before a special session of the full Supreme Judicial Court of Maine at the Hancock County Courthouse commemorating the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of Hancock County. He was a co-author with his son-in-law Timothy Plouff of Somebody's a Talkin' - The History of the Union River Telephone Company in Aurora Maine (2011). Herb was a co-owner with his siblings of the Union River Telephone which was co-founded by his namesake Herbert T. Silsby in 1905 and served as President from 1953 to 2013. Herb also wrote A Brief History of Ellsworth (1963), History of Superior Court (1980), History of the Ellsworth American (2000), was co-author of One Hundred Years of Law and Justice (1991) and many other articles in historical and legal periodicals, newspapers and magazines. Herb also loved sharing his enthusiasm for Hancock County history in his popular weekly column "Looking Backward" featured in The Ellsworth American from 1996 to 2004. In his "spare" time, Herb enjoyed golf, bridge, eating Ruth's cooking especially her pies, opera and telling stories of his childhood in Aurora. Herb was a man of character whose life was defined by commitment to his family, his profession and his community. Herb is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth (Blaisdell) Silsby; his daughters Paula D. Silsby of Portland and Kathryn M. Silsby and her husband Timothy Plouff of Otis; his brother William S. Silsby, Jr. and his wife Noreen of Aurora; his sister Beverly McLean and her husband Preston of Bangor; his sister-in-law Glenice Carpenter of Ellsworth and several nieces and nephews.

[52826] "Bngor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 16 October 2021: "Augusta - Curtis Winslow West passed away at the age of 99, peacefully in his sleep at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on October 11, 2021. Curt, as he liked to be called, was born in Steuben, Maine on July 1, 1922. He was one of 12 children born to Gladys A. (Beal) and Thaddeus L. West. Growing up in the 1920s and 30s there was plenty of work to do on the homestead as well as lobstering. Curt has recalled many memories helping 'Papa' (his dad) build and take care of the lobster traps. In 1939 Curt enlisted in the Maine National Guard and later joined the U.S. Army with the 43rd Infantry Division Artillery. He fought in the Northern Solomon Islands, New Guinea and Luzon in the Philippine Islands. Curt was the only one in his unit who knew how to run the Commanding General's 42' high-speed boat while they were in New Guinea and Luzon. The General's name for Curt was 'herrin' choker', and the General often declared, 'Herrin' choker is the only one I trust to operate my boat properly.' Curt saved many lives in rescue missions amidst rough seas. He was awarded the following medals: the Bronze Star, Good Conduct World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with three bronze stars and one Bronze Service Arrowhead and the American Campaign Medal for Service. In 2018, Curt received the Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medal and Certificate for his service during WWII. Curt was also presented with a challenge coin by the Maine National Guard. Curt met his future wife, Dolly (Dorothy) Foster from Brookline, Massachusetts while he was studying at Northeast University on the G.I. Bill. Curt and Dolly were married on November 14, 1947 and soon after, they moved to the Boothbay region where their son, John, was born and several years later daughter, Debbie. Curt lobstered when he first came to Boothbay Harbor and also worked with Albert Herald before joining Central Maine Power Company in the Boothbay Harbor office. He retired in 1984 from Central Maine Power after 35 years so he could care for his wife, Dolly, who had cancer. Dolly passed away in March of 1986. Curt was active in many organizations in the community and held many positions in those groups: The Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church, the Knights of Pythias, Masons, Eastern Star, Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, the Fish and Game Club, Seaside Riders Snowmobile Club and American Legion to name a few. Curt also started his own business of small engine repair that he retired from in 2016 after he had rotator cuff surgery. He was also well-known on the Peninsula for making pies and popovers. Curt, along with Sherwood Leighton, ran the bean-hole bean suppers at the Methodist Church for well over 30 years. They were gifted two old cast-iron pits by the Reverend Fowle who also shared the secret recipe with them. One of the cast-iron pots now resides at the Hendricks Hill Museum in Southport. It was presented to the Museum docents, Jean Thomson and Evelyn Sherman in May 2019. Curt also enjoyed his weekly golf outings with 'The boys.' Every Thursday this group of friends met to go golfing during the spring and summer, then during the fall and winter they still met to go to breakfast. Even though during the winter months there may only have been two of them, they still went for breakfast. This tradition continued until the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020. Curt is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy 'Dolly' Ann Foster in 1986. He is survived by his son, John L. West and wife Diane (Barter) of Wiscassett, Maine; his daughter, Debbie Ann Prouty and husband, Tom of Jefferson, Maine; granddaughter, Sarah Edith Prouty Foster and her husband, Jake, of Turner, Maine, and his pride and joy, great-grandson, Corbin Winslow Foster; also his two sisters, Priscilla Kennedy of Steuben, Maine; and Margaret "Peg" Grant of Southwest Harbor, Maine; along with several nieces and nephews."

[13726] Find A Grave memorial 83927410 offers Norma's obituary: "Norma J. Yount Burns, 73 of Fairview died on Sunday Februrary 10, 2008 at Hamot Medical Center. She was born April 30, 1934 in Mayport, Pa.. a daughter of the late Elwood and Grace Geist Yount. Norma graduated from the Punxsutawney High School and later worked for Cameron Mfg., a division of Sylvania, in Reynoldsville. She moved to Wesleyville in 1962. She lived in the Brookville area for a period of time before moving to Fairview in 1978 where she has resided since. She had most recently been employed at the Girard Dinor where she worked for over 20 years. She was a member of the Reynoldsville Chapter #220 Order of the Eastern Star, the VFW Post Auxiliary in Millcreek, a life member of the Erie Twins Club and enjoyed flower gardening. Norma's priority had been her family and was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clair and Glenn Yount. She will be sadly missed by her family which includes her husband, Robert E. Burns, whom she married September 3, 1955 at the Langville, Pa.. Methodist Church; three daughters, Michele L. Steele and her husband Edward of Fairview, Robin S. Quint and her husband Marc of Dexter, Mich., Karen A. Burns of Painesville, Ohio; two sons, Michael L. Burns of Brookville, Robert E. Burns Jr. and his wife Emily of Jacksonville, Fla..; three sisters, Nina Smathers and her husband Roscoe of Mahaffey, Bertha Dinger and her husband Byron of Punxsutawney, Louise Vasbinder of Punxsutawney; three brothers, Daryl Yount and his wife Dorothy of Punxsutawney, Harold Yount and his wife Jean of Strongsville, Ohio, William Yount and his wife Ruby of Punxsutawney; five grandchildren, Gregory Steele, Erin Burns, Melissa Steele, Kristen Burns and Olivia Burns, also many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services will be held there on Thursday at 10 a.m. Rev. Dennis Miller, Pastor of the Fairview United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Reynoldsville Cemetery."
