[15047] Kathleen Moss wrote in 2005: "Novesta Township Cemetery is located in Novesta Township, Tuscola County on Cemetery Road about 5 miles south of Cass City, Michigan. There are no records for this cemetery. An earlier sextant threw them all away when they got wet in a building where they were stored. If there is no grave marker, there is no recorded grave." Charles m. (1) 9 Oct 1869 in Scotland ON Jane Westbrook (b. 16 July 1848 in Scotland, ON, d. 11 Jan 1911 in Detford, MI, buried in Novesta Township Cemetery, Tuscola County, MI). Charles m. (2) 29 Dec 1915 in Oakland, ON Bessie Kelley (b. ca. 1860 to Isaac Kelley and Caroline _____; Bessie d. 18 Dec 1933 in Detford, MI). Cass City Chronicle, Friday, May 31, 1935, page 1, column 3 reports: "DEFORD LOSES ITS ELDEST RESIDENT - C. J. Malcolm Taught in Rural Schools for a 30-Year Period - Deford lost its oldest citizen Sunday in the death of Charles J. Malcolm, a resident of Novesta township for 55 years. He had been ill about a week. Funeral services were conducted at the Deford M. E. church on Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. W. K. Jones, pastor of the church. Entombment was in the Novesta cemetery. Charles John Malcolm was born in Scotland, Ontario, on June 6, 1843. At the age of 19, he commenced teaching in the schools near that place, and later came to Michigan, where he taught in rural schools near Imlay City and Lapeer. He came to Deford in 1880 and taught several winter terms in Tuscola county. He was a school teacher for a 30-year period. Summers were spent in cultivating his farm, one mile west and one mile south of Deford. He was employed for several years as a monument salesman and served for eight years as postmaster at Deford. Mr. Malcolm married Miss Jane Westbrook while he was a resident of Scotland, Ontario. She died 25 years ago and eight years later he was united in marriage with Bessie Kelley of Wilsonville, Ontario. She passed away two years ago. A year after coming to Novesta township, Mr. Malcolm lost his farm buildings in the big forest fire of 1881 and he and his wife and three children saved their lives in the conflagration by going down into the farm well where they remained for a period of about 12 hours. Mr. Malcolm was a charter member of the M. E. church at Deford and a Maccabee. He is survived by three children, H. D. Malcolm and Mrs. Nellie Lester, both of Deford, and Mrs. William Mathison of Farmington." The same newspaper: December 22, 1933, page 4, column 4: "Pianist for 30 Years-- Mrs. C. J. Malcolm, 73, died at her home in Deford Monday after a long illness of heart trouble. Funeral services were conducted at two o'clock Wednesday at the home. On Thursday, the remains were taken to Oakland, Ont., where another service was held in the church in which Mrs. Malcolm had been pianist for 30 years. Burial was also made at Oakland. Bessie Kelley and Mr. Malcolm were married Dec. 29, 1915, at Oakland and have since made their home in Deford. Mrs. Malcolm is survived by her husband, one stepson, Howard J. Malcolm, of Deford; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Fred Lester, of Deford and Mrs. William Mathison, of Farmington; one brother, Wesley Kelley, of Oakland, Ont; three sisters, Mrs. Roma Porter, of Brantford, Ont., Mrs. Frank Riddle of Wilsonville, Ont., and a sister at Lowell, Mich."
