[13975] Known as "The Black Comyn," he was seen in 1281. He was a claimant of the Crown of Scotland as a descendant of Donald Bane. "Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists Who Came to America before 1700," Frederick Lewis Weis (7th edition, with additions and corrections by Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1992), line 95, gives the family as shown here.

[1425] William assumed the surname of his place of birth. In 1215 he visited his sister Margaret and her husband Saire de Quincy. While in Scotland he married Mary, daughter and heir of Gilbert, Earl of Stratham. William is said to the founder of the house of Hamilton. His line is given in "The Hamiltons of Waterborough (York County, Maine), Their Ancestors and Descendants), by Samuel King Hamilton (1912). William's son, Sir Gilbert de Hamilton, settled in Scotland where he witnessed a charter 12 Dec 1272.

[1944] John was forced by the barons to sign the Magna Charta (June, 1215). [For a list of the barons present at this signing, see http://www.infokey.com/hall/baron1.htm] His nickname ("Lackland") derives from his exclusion from the distribution of his father's vast estates. His reign saw the loss of the Plantagenet domains in France (except Gascony) to the French King (Philip). Inflation and the heavy cost of his wars helped lead to the revolt of his barons and his forced signing of the Great Charter. John was invested as Duke of Normandy at Rouen by Archbishop Walter 04-25-1199 and was annointed king at Westminster by Hubert, Archbishop of Canterbury, 27 May 1199 (Ascension Day). He lacked the decisive leadership qualities of his father. He was a lustful, greedy man; he sired at least five children out of wedlock and kept mistresses during his two marriages. He founded a religious house at Beaulieu in Hampshire, and is buried at the shrine of his favorite saint, Wulfstan (the 11th century bishop), in Worcester Cathedral (as directed by John's will). The story of John's family is well told in the popular novel by Thomas B. Costain, "The Conquerors" (Doubleday & Co., 1949); also see "King John," Alan Lloyd (David Charles, 1973), "The Reign of King John," Sidney Painter (Johns Hopkins paperbacks, 1966), "England Without Richard," John T. Appleby (G. Bell & Sons, 1963). For the history and content of the Magna Charta, see http://oll.libertyfund.org/Texts/McKechnie0323/0032_Bk.html.

[14386] http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/HUNGARY.htmoffers in 2007: "Possible relative of the kings of Hungary, precise relationship not known: Hedwig of Hungary. The Chronicle of Gaimar, written in [1155], contains a confusing account of the 'elder ćtheling Edgar' (presumably an error for Edmund) having a love affair with the daughter of the king of Hungary who became pregnant and whom he married, and by whom he was the father of Queen Margaret of Scotland. The Chronicle of Ailred, abbot of Rievaulx, also refers to Edmund having married the daughter of the Hungarian king. Edmund's wife is named Hedwig in Burke's Guide to the Royal Family, although the primary source on which this is based has not been identified. In the absence of further information, the accuracy of these reports must be considered dubious as none of the Hungarian kings during the first half of the 11th century provides an obvious match. In the case of King István, it is likely that all his daughters predeceased their father in view of the accession of his nephew, King Péter, when he died. In any case, his daughters would have been beyond child-bearing age when the ćtheling Edmund arrived in Hungary, assuming this arrival took place in [1046] as is probable. As the ćtheling brothers were closely linked to King András I, it is unlikely that Edmund would have married a daughter of either of his disgraced predecessors King Péter or King Samuel Aba, and any daughters of the former at least would have been too young for such a marriage. Finally, any daughters of King András himself would certainly have been too young for the marriage. There is therefore considerable doubt about the historical authenticity of this Hungarian princess or her marriage to Edmund. m Edmund of England, son of Edmund 'Ironsides' King of England & his wife Ćldgyth --- (1016-before 1054)."
