[61020] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 10 June 2022: "Patten, Maine - James Kent Hathaway, 88, of Patten, passed on to his next life on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Togus Veterans Hospital. Jim, Jimbo, James K., Hennessey, or Papa, as he was known, was born on December 5, 1933, in Island Falls, Maine. His father was Albion Foss Hathaway, and his mother, who died tragically early on, was Madeline Campbell Hathaway. James and older brother Donald were raised by their new mother, Clara Campbell Hathaway, in San Francisco and Alcatraz Island, where Foss was a guard for the Federal Prison Service. They moved back to Island Falls in 1941. Said by most to be the 'smartest of all the Hathaways' - sometimes too smart for his own good - he graduated from Island Falls High school at 16, and started as a freshman at Orono. Although he was a voracious reader and an exceptional writer, that didn't work for him at the time. James was a natural athlete and had a great time growing up early, playing catcher and traveling around with the World War II guys on the town team. At a young age James lost two fingers in a wood sawing accident, so when the Korean Conflict kicked up, the Army didn't want him; the Navy didn't mind. He fondly remembered his time on the old wooden minesweepers off the coast of Korea, and he made first-class in four years. But he couldn't wait to get home after four. Like his Aunt Mary, he was naturally musical, singing in the choir, and joking that he played the 'one-stringed wombat' in a college band at Ricker on the G.I. Bill. He did matriculate. Marching to a different drummer and always dreaming, James worked at a variety of jobs including Maine Potato Growers and Katahdin Trust Company. But the one he surely enjoyed the most was carrying the mail on the rural route in Sherman, where he could blast through the February snow drifts because 'neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds.' He met the love of his life, Melvina Quint McNally. They were married on Valentine's Day, and then raised her kids, plus a new one of their own, David. In the late 60's, they owned and operated The Patten Hotel and Restaurant, which later led to building the Hathaway's Motel, later turning it into apartments. Jim enjoyed summers with Mellie, family, and friends at their camp at Shin Pond. He loved going to all the County Fairs, particularly the horse races. James was a great historian of Maine, and in his final years, James and David spent their times researching family history and traveling the Great State of Maine to all points of the compass. If James wanted to go, David would drive him, keeping a map on the wall of their travels. They were especially interested in the 19th century Hathaways logging up the Wassataquoik. He knew folks everywhere, or he knew folks who knew folks, and could tell a story about them all, which he recalled with jocularity at family gatherings. He could tell a good story, with a touch of his infectious laugh. James was devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they surrounded him at the end. Surviving James are his son, David, and stepchildren, Darlene and Kerry; six grand children; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Tim; sister, Mary; and seven nieces and nephews. His parents; beloved wife, Mellie; brother, Donald; and stepdaughter, Susan, predeceased him."

William Hilton 3d lived and had lands at York and also at Manchester, Mass., where he lived in 1714. He was extensively engaged in the coasting trade and in the fisheries; he made great improvements on his lands, and owned large stocks of cattle. He died 21st June, 1723, aged 44.The inscription on his gravestone called him lieutenant. (From New Englanders to Nova Scotia, No. 58) He received several grants of land from the Town of York, in which he styles himself of York , fisherman. Later, he had a house and land at Muscongus, being extensively engaged in the fisheries and coast trade there. He already had a house in Manchester, Mass. at Black Cove when he bought land there of Phillip Nichols, NOV 22, 1709 (Essex Deeds)(Lib. 23, fol. 268). He also bought other land adjoining and in these deeds, he is called fisherman and coaster. Although Mr. Hilton had a house in Manchester, Mass. as early as 1709, he appears to have resided during the summer season at Muscongus, where he looked after his fishing interests and it was probably about the year 1715 when he became a permanent resident of Manchester. Mr. Hilton was buried in the old burial ground at Manchester and his gravestone bears the inscription: Here lyeth the body of lifnt William Hilton Who died June ye 21st, 1723 aged 45 years.
William Hilton - "William of Broad Cove" - was born 1678 in York, Maine, son of William Hilton ("William the Younger") and Anne (Parsons?). He married 02 June 1699 at Marblehead, Massachusetts, Margaret Gould Stilson (born 1679 and died November 1763 in Manchester, Massachusetts - daughter of James Stilson and Margaret Gould (daughter of John Gould)). Margaret was a Quaker. William was a fisherman, hunter, land speculator, and army officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. In 1703 he had a plot of land adjoining his father's in Maine and another at Bravefoot Harbor. In 1706, as a sergeant, he was in charge of a group of 58 men and 2 horses that crossed on the Merrimac Ferry.
The land in Manchester was bought in 1709, but William was still in Maine in 1710 when he was in court for striking one Robert Oliver, and did not sell his Maine land until 1711.
The Boston Newsletter of 19 November 1711 reports that, "Lt. Hilton brot in 3 Indians who with a Frenchman from Menis had sacked a part of York and carried away a sloop. They were followed and taken by Lt. Hilton and a dozen volunteers." He had killed the Indian captives, and during the resulting period of criticism he was indicted for false oath, but acquitted.
Circa 1720 William became involved with his father-in-law and his mother-in-law's stepfather in a land swindle at Muscongus. Several deeds were forged, including one dated 1626 to John Brown, allegedly Margaret's great-grandfather. Because of this fraud, a listing by Hilton of John Brown's children may be unreliable.
William died 21 June 1723 in Manchester, Massachusetts. Margaret remarried 08 December 1727 to John Allen.

She was born March 4, 1911 in Ashland, the daughter of William D. and Georgia (Portney) Snowman. Marion grew up in Ashland until moving to Hartland at the age of 14, She attended Hartland Academy, Marion married Levere Hart in 1933. After living in Corinna for more than 35 years she moved to Pittsfield in 1978. She was a good friend to her neighbors and a kind and loving mother and grandmother who always put her family first. She enjoyed her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and would make doughnuts, cookies, pickles and jellies for them. She had a passion for her hobby of embroidery, having finished more than several pieces over the years. Marion had also been a member of the Farm Bureau and Grange. She is survived by her son, Bryan Hart and wife Marilyn, of Huber Heights, Ohio; daughters, Gloria Debeck and husband Charles of Pittsfield, Sandra Simpson and husband Wayne, and Carolyn Gillahan and husband Robert, all of Hampden; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren three great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Levere Hart, in 1981, and siblings Kathleen (Snowman) Snow and Vernon, Millard, and Donald Snowman."
