The 1920 census lists Robert, age 4, a "lodger," in the household of his stepfather, William Strunk in Akron, Ohio - William and Nellie DeForest (his "assistant") operated a boarding house. Robert graduated from high school and was a purchasing agent or buyer. Robert enlisted in the Army from Cuyahoga Co., OH and eventually became a Captain. Robert A. Rodrick's ancestry is from an unverified posting in Ancestry.com. A posting in Ancestry.com offers:
"Bob Rodrick enlisted in the army on February 9, 1942 at Camp Perry, and served as a lieutenant in the 102nd Infantry Division during World War II. Following is a brief summary of the actions of his Division:
"The 102nd Infantry Division (Ozarks) was deployed on 12 Sept 1944 to Central Europe (Rhineland). They served 173 days of combat under Maj. Gen. John B. Anderson and Maj. Gen. Frank A. Keating. The unit was deactivated on 23 March 1946.
"They arrived at Cherbourg, France, 23 September 1944, and after training near Valognes, moved to the German-Netherlands border, where they prepared for an attack along the River Roer. After the attack they advanced toward Lövenich and Erkelenz, took Krefeld, and reached the Rhine. During March the Division was on the defensive along the Rhine. Crossing the river in April, they attacked in the Wesergebirge, meeting stiff opposition. Wilsede and Hessisch-Oldendorf fell, 12 April 1945, and the 102d pushed on to the Elbe, meeting little resistance. Breitenfeld fell, 15 April, and the Division outposted the Elbe River, 48 miles from Berlin, where the advance was halted on orders.
"On 13 April 13 1945, German SS and Luftwaffe troops, retreating from the Allied advance, murdered 1016 political and military prisoners near the town of Gardelegen. The war crime was discovered two days later by the 102nd Infantry Division (F Company, 2d Battalion, 405th Regiment). About 700 of the bodies were buried in mass graves near the site. American troops arrived before the evidence was completely hidden. Several days after discovering the atrocity, American troops forced the German residents of Gardelegen to rebury the dead in individually marked graves. Gardelegen is now a national memorial."
[60681] The unverified file G9JM-95P in familysearch.org offers: "William Leroy White was born on 19 March 1887, in Belfast, Waldo, Maine, United States as the son of William Albert White and Elizabeth Petti. He had at least 2 sons and 2 daughters with Margaret Elizabeth Hewey. He lived in Verona Island, Hancock, Maine, United States in 1930 and Bucksport, Hancock, Maine, United States in 1940. He died on 5 November 1951, at the age of 64, and was buried in Bucksport, Hancock, Maine, United States."
