Frederick IV, Elector PALATINE

[27147]

5 MAR 1574 - 19 SEP 1610

Family 1 : Louise Juliana VON ORANGE-NASSAU
  1. +Elisabeth Charlotte of the PALATINATE

INDEX

[27147] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_IV,_Elector_Palatine offers: ". . . only surviving son of Louis VI, Elector Palatine and Elisabeth of Hesse, called 'Frederick the Righteous' (in German, Friedrich Der Aufrichtige; in French Frédéric IV le juste). Born in Amberg, his father had died in October 1583 and Frederick came under the guardianship of his uncle John Casimir, an ardent Calvinist. The Calvinist mathematician and astronomer Bartholemaeus Pitiscus served as Frederick's tutor and later became court preacher. In January 1592, Frederick assumed control of the government of the Palatinate upon the death of John Casimir. Frederick continued John Casimir's anti-Catholic measures and in 1608 became the head of the Protestant military alliance known as the Protestant Union. . . . In 1619, his son Frederick V, Elector Palatine accepted the crown of Bohemia, an act that initiated the Thirty Years' War, a war that proved disastrous to the Palatinate."

Virginia Horler notes:

Howard had no middle name, just initial "H". Nickname = Brick

According to his son, Ken, remembers that in about 1898, after graduating from Oakland High School, Howard joined a school friend and the friend's father (who was Captain of a sailing ship) for a trip to Alaska. Howard spent four years in Alaska which coincided with the Klondike Gold Rush. He staked out a claim in Prudhoe Bay after seeing oil seeping from ground because he thought it might be a coal deposit and later lost the claim because he did not improve it. A sailor on same ship jumped ship and later discovered gold in Nome.

Howard used a dog team to deliver mail between several Alaskan towns. During a bad snow storm, he had to make an emergency camp. After the storm the dogs were buried in snow but were fine after Howard located them by the steam coming up from mounds and then dug them out. Daughter, Jeanne, recalls that Howard rode a dog sled from Juneau to Nome and that he panned for gold.

In 1910, the Census lists Howard living with his wife, son and Mother-in-Law in Oakland, CA. He had worked all of 1909 as a solicitor for a Laundry Company and the family rented their home. Howard and May raised their family in three houses in Oakland located on Laguna Avenue, and at 2912 Delaware Avenue and 1307 or 2307 Boston Avenue (across from the Fruitvale School). He was also an amateur boxer.

On 12 Sep 1918 Howard H. Palmer registered for the draft with the US Military, resident at 2912 Delaware St., Oakland, age 39, born 10 Nov 1878, worked as laundryman for Crystal Laundry in Oakland, married to May F. Palmer of same address, height 5'8-3/4", blue eyes and auburn hair. signed Howard H. Palmer. (4-1-11 C No. 1823)

Howard and May divorced in 1924. He later married Stella Schwartz, who ran a boarding house in Oakland. They lived at the boarding house at 1905 - 5th Avenue in Oakland.

Howard owned several laundry routes and contracted with Crystal Laundry in Oakland. Son, Ken, helped his Father deliver laundry on Saturdays. Howard had inherited tools to resole shoes, which he did.

Ken remembers his father as a friendly and generous person who knew many people because he was born and raised in Oakland. He also had a temper and punished his children if he thought it needed. He encouraged Curt to study and go to college (Ken was not interested at that time.)

Buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland. He married (1) Frances May Larkin, married 22 Dec 1907 in Oakland, CA, b. 8 May 1890 in Visalia, Tulare, California, (daughter of John J. Larkin and Clara Irene Conley) d. 5 May 1939 in Sacramento, Sacramento, California. Frances: Shortly after May was born, her Father left and then her parents divorced. While May's Mother, Clara, worked as a seamstress in Fresno, CA, May's Grandmother, Melissa Conley, raised May during her early years along with Grandmother's Conley's youngest son, Robert, who was two years older than May.

May, as she was known, attended school through 9th grade. In about 1906 May moved with her Mother, Clara, to Oakland and it was there that she met and married Howard Palmer. In 1907 when they were married in Oakland, Howard was 29 and May was 17. Both of their mothers were present at their wedding.

The 1910 Census shows that May and Howard were renting a home in Oakland, CA and had their first son, Curtis, born that year. May's Mother, Clara Cornforth, was living with them.

After May and Howard divorced in 1924, Kenneth and Jeanne lived with May, and Curtis lived with Howard, all in Oakland. May worked as a secretary for a wax paper broker and later for the Port of Oakland.

1930 Census Oakland, Alameda, CA ED 195 (2912 Delaware Street): May L. Palmer (39) divorced, secretary at paper company; Curtis (21); Kenneth (19); Jeanne (17); Clara Barry (57); widow, maternity nurse. Both May and Clara were married at age 17.

May and daughter, Jeanne, were living at 409 East 21st Street in Oakland prior to January 1939 when May moved to Sacramento to live with her son, Curtis, and his wife Helen at 719-1/2 26th Street in Sacramento for five months before her death.

May died at age 48 in 1939 in Sacramento while Ken and his wife, Elise, were in St. Louis and before May's grandchildren were born. She was cremated and her ashes were given to the family. He married (2) Stella Schwartz, married ABT 1942 in Oakland, CA, b. 29 Dec 1873 in Kentucky, d. 13 May 1955 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.
