See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), pp. 252-253. Faithful to Empress Maud, she rewarded him with the Earldom of Oxford, bestowed upon him in 1155 by Henry II (making Aubrey the first Earl of Oxford). The web site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/james/f042.htm in 2003 reports: "Aubrey de Vere, born before 1120, third Baron by tenure, of Kensington, Count of Ghisnes, for his fidelity to the Empress Maud, was confirmed by that princess in the office of Great Lord Chamberlain, and all his father's territorial possessions. He had likewise other important grants with the Earldom of Cambridge, provided that dignity was not vested in the King of Scots, but if it were, then he was to have his choice of the Earldoms of Oxford, Berkshire, or Dorsetshire, all which grants being ratified by King Henry II., he was created Earl of Oxford, with the usual grant to earls, of the third penny of the pleas of the county. In the 12th year of King Henry II., on the levy of the aid for portioning the king's daughter, the Earl of Oxford certified his knight's fees to be in number twenty-eight, for which he paid 20 pounds, and in the 2nd year of King Richard I., he paid a fine of 500 marks to the king, "for the sister of Walter de Bolebec, to make a wife for his son." In four years afterwards he contributed 30 pounds, 2 shillings, and 6 pence for the knight's fees he then held, towards the sum at that time raised for the ransom of the king. The earl married (1) Euphamia Cantilupe, daughter of William de Cantilupe, by whom he had no issue, and (2) Lucia Abrincis, daughter and heiress of William de Abrincis."

Thomas was a Knight of the Garter, Lord Mowbray Segrave and Stourton, created Earl of Nottinghham in 1383, Earl Marshall of England in 1384, Duke of Norfolk in 1397. Elizabeth Fitz Alan was his second wife - see http://www.royalancestorscollins.com/mowbray.htm - cf. http://www.geocities.com/hank99uk/Mowbray.html, http://ddl-web-hosting.com/mowbray/page34.htm and http://www.geocities.com/hank99uk/CaludonCastle.html (which reports: "Thomas De Mowbray, the Duke of Norfolk along with Henry Bolingbroke, the Duke of Hereford were immortalised in Shakespeares Richard II after the battle of Gosford Green, a battle which in fact never happened. The story is that while travelling home in the company of Bolingbroke, De Mowbray claimed that the king (Richard II) was going to do the same to him (Henry) as he had done to other Lords who opposed him, remarks which Bolingbroke challenged De Mowbray to deny. Richard ordered the two men to fight a duel at Gosford Green, at that time just outside the walls of the City of Coventry. On the day of the battle Thomas De Mowbray rode out from Caludon Castle to meet with Bolingbroke who had stayed at nearby Bagington Castle. As the two men prepared to fight the king rode from his camp on nearby Ball Hill and stopped them, ordering both men into exile. Henry Bolingbroke went to France and returned less than a year later to overthrow Richard II and become King Henry IV. Thomas De Mowbray never returned home and died in exile in 1399. The street names around Gosford Green commemorate the occasion, Kingsway, Bolingbroke Road, King Richard Street and Mowbray street."
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk offered 30 Oct 2005 re: Thomas' birth date: "The most precise statement in his inquisitions post mortem is that he was aged 33 years and 26 weeks on 22 September [1399] when he died [Cal. Inq. p.m., vol.18, no 268]. Another inquisition says he was aged 33 years and more when his grandmother Margaret died (the date being stated there as 11 August 1399) [no 270]. Two of Margaret's inquisitions say that she died 24 March 1398/9, and that Thomas was then 33 years of age [nos 235, 236]. Thomas de Mowbray's elder brother John was born 1 August 1365 [Complete Peerage, vol.9, p.780], so the date given, less than 8 months later, must be incorrect. Their father died in 1368, and was predeceased by their mother. If the "26 weeks" component is precise, the correct date must be 22 March 1366/7 or 1367/8."
