"Lord of Drayton, co. Stafford, great-grandson of Richard Basset, justice
of England, and his wife, Maud Ridel, had summons...to attend the king at
Chester, well furnished with horse and arms, to oppose the incursions of
the Welsh. But in the 48th of the same monarch, having joined Simon
Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and other rebellious barons, he was appointed
the next year, after the defeat of the king's arms at Lewes, and capture of
the king, governor for those lords of the castles of Salop and Bruges. He
fell, however, before the close of the same year, at the battle of Evesham.
It is said that when the Earl of Leicester perceived the great force and
order of the royal army, calculating upon defeat, he conjured Ralph Basset
and Hugh Despencer to retire, and reserve themselves for better times; but
they bravely answered, `that if he perished, they would not desire to
live.' Lord Basset m. Margaret, dau. of Roger de Someri, Baron of Dudley,
and widow of Urban St. Pierre and had issue. I. Ralph, his successor. II.
Maud, m. to John, Lord Grey de Wilton." - Burke's "Dormant and Extinct
Peerages," 1883. Ralph descends from Thurston the Norman who founded the
family soon after the Conquest. His summons to Chester was in 1257/8 and
he was created a baron 14 December 1264.

Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
JAMES II (born 1633, ruled 1685-88) was a grandson of James I. His ideas of the "divine right of kings" were the same as those of his grandfather and his father, Charles I. He obstinately attempted to carry out these ideas in spite of the fact that his father had been beheaded by Parliament. It has been said of James II that he alienated "not only the classes which had fought against his father, but also those that had fought for his father." James was created duke of York in 1634. When he succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother, Charles II, the people welcomed him and fought for him against a rebellion led by the duke of Monmouth. But the cruelty that was shown to the followers of Monmouth at their trials--called the "Bloody Assizes" because of their vindictiveness--turned many against the king. Then James further angered the nation by trying to restore Catholicism as the religion of England. He set aside or "dispensed" with the laws against Roman Catholics and Dissenters. He appointed many Catholics to office and even named some as bishops in the Church of England. At first there was no organized opposition since James was 51 when he came to the throne and his two daughters by his first wife, Anne, were both Protestants. But in 1688 a son was born to him by his second wife, Mary of Modena, a devout Catholic. Afraid that the boy would become another Catholic king, Protestant nobles unjustly claimed that the child was not really the son of James and the queen, but was fraudulently smuggled into the palace. They used this excuse to invite James's daughter Mary and her husband, William of Orange, to come from Holland and take the throne of England. When William landed, James lost his supporters and fled to France. This was the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688. James was cordially received by Louis XIV, who had been furnishing him money to carry on his fight for absolute power and Catholicism. The French king now gave James a pension and support in trying to recover his throne. But James was defeated in Ireland at the battle of the Boyne (July 1, 1690) and the French fleet was crushed at La Hogue in 1692. James then gave up actively trying to regain his throne. He lived quietly in France, where he died in 1701.

James died of cerebral vascular disease due to syphilis contracted from Anne, Countess of Soutesk - ref: "The Death of Kings: A Medical History of the Kings and Queens of England," Clifford Brewer (London: Abson Books, 2000, reprinted 2001), pp. 186-189.
