Marguerite de Brabant, fille de Jean III, Duc de Brabant." Louis III 'de Mâle' has been recorded as having fathered ten illegitimate children, but Margaretha and Louis had only one surviving child, their daughter and heir Margarethe, who married first Philippe de Rouvre, duc de Bourgogne; after his early death she married Philippe 'the Bold', duc de Bourgogne. The Dampierres, originally only counts of Flanders, had through a clever marriage policy managed to inherit the counties of Nevers (1280) and Rethel (1328). Through her grandmother, a daughter of King Philip V of France, the counties of Artois and Burgundy (the "Franche Comté") were added to this (1382). These lands were to provide the core of the dominions of the House of Valois-Burgundy, which were, together with the Duchy of Burgundy, to provide them with a power base to challenge the rule of their cousins, the Valois kings of France in the 15th century. Her eldest son, John the Fearless, succeeded her husband in 1404 as Duke of Burgundy and her as Count of Burgundy, Count of Artois, and Count of Flanders. In 1406 her younger son Anthony inherited Brabant and Limburg. Nevers and Rethel were at first, in her lifetime, given to her eldest sons John (Nevers) and Anthony (Rethel), but after John's accession to the duchy, Nevers went to her youngest son Philip. Rethel was given to Philip in 1402 when it became clear that Anthony would inherit Brabant."

[730] John was baptised as an adult 08 Feb 1736 at Wells, Maine. His will was made 08 March 1792 and entered for probate 28 May 1795; the exact date of his death is not known. His grandfather John Stover gave him 30 acres in York Co., ME 15 Feb 1721, calling him "his little grandson."{-York Deeds,10:170} John bought from his father a tract of land in the township of York adjoining Wells and fronting the ocean.{-York Deeds,18:273} Mary was his fourth child. A John Perkins is on the list of the York Train Band in 1757 according to "History of York, Maine," Charles Edward Banks (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967), Vol. II, p. 214. Cf. "Jacob Perkins of Wells, Maine and His Descendants," Thomas Allen Perkins, (Haverhill, MA: Record Pub. Co., 1947 c1948), p. 7. A John Perkins is listed in "The Artificers and Inhabitants Who Built Fort George, Penobscot, 1779-1780" in "The Maine Genealogist" magazine (Vol. 26, p. 60; 2004) as providing four oxen in 1779.
