"History of the Town of Hampton, New Hampshire: From Its Settlement in 1638, to the Autumn of 1892." by Joseph Dow & Lucy Ellen Dow (Salem press publishing and printing co., 1894), p. 586 reports she is daughter of Francis Asten [sic] who had a grant of land in Hampton, NH 30 June 1640 and who d. by 13 July 1642 when a grant was made to his widow, Isabella, "daughter of John Bland (sometimes called Smith)."

"Entertaining Satan:Witchcraft and the Culture of Early New England," John Putnam Demos (Oxford University Press - 1982 Chapter 10): Several years later Hampton undertook its third, and last, prosecution for witchcraft. Interestingly, Eunice Cole was no longer the leading figure; other women had now been pushed to center stage. The case began with the death of a little child -- Moses Godfrey, age fifteen months -- in July 1680. A jury of inquest found "grounds of suspicion that the said child was murdered by witchcraft. Naming no names, the jurymen nonetheless alluded to "a party suspected," and the following day the court took bond from one John Fuller to guarantee that "Rachel, his wife, shall appear . . . to answer what shall be charged against her in point of witchcraft.
In fact, the suspicious death of the Godfrey child was not the only count against Goodwife Fuller. Various personal testimonies portrayed her as a generally eccentric figure. Often she had played the role of an expert on witchcraft, describing "how those that were witches did go abroad at night." Once she had named "several persons that she reckoned as witches and wizards in this town. (Her list included Eunice Cole.) On another occasion she bad told a neighbor of "a great rout at Goodman Roby's ... when [witches] had pulled Doctor Reed out of the bed, and with an enchanted bridle did intend to lead a jaunt.(99) Moreover, she had specifically advised the Godfrey family to "Lay sweet bays under the threshold; it would keep a witch from coming in." As things turned out, this procedure served to implicate Rachel herself:
A second person was charged as a witch that summer at Hampton. Isabella Towle by name, she was a woman in her late forties, married, and the mother of nine children. Her husband, Philip, was first a seaman," and later a "yeoman" of average position in the community. Beyond this the record does not speak. Particularly unfortunate is the lack of any material on the substantive charges against Goodwife Towle. All that survives is a court order, from September 1680, that "Rachel Fuller and Isabel Towle, being apprehended and committed upon suspicion of witchcraft . . . still continue in prison till bond be given for their good behavior of £100 apiece, during the Court's pleasure. Both defendants were discharged in the following year.
(This woman was born Isabella Austin, dau. of Francis and Isabella [Bland] Austin, in about the year 1633. Her father, an early resident of Hampton, died in 1642, and her mother was remarried thereafter to Thomas Leavitt. The Bland connection, on the mother's side, was a distinguished one: "Mr." John Bland was an early and prominent settler of Martha's Vineyard. Moreover, Thomas Leavitt was a man of considerable stature within Hampton itself. Isabella Austin married Philip Towle November 19, 1657. Towle's origins are not known, though local tradition makes him out an Irishman. He arrived in Hampton just a short while before his marriage. Philip and Isabella [Austin] Towle had children: Philip (born 1659), Caleb (born 1661, killed by Indians 1677), Joshua (born 1663), Mary (born 1665), Joseph and Benjamin (twins, born 1669). Francis (born 1672), John (born 1674), Caleb (born 1678). Philip Towle died in 1696, aged about eighty; his widow died in 1719. A file in http://trees.ancestry.com in 2010 offers: "Adam de Brus, whose descendants continued to hold lands in Englnd as Lords of Skelton. When Peter de Brus III, last Bruce Lord of Skelton, died in 1272, his sisters were coheiresses. One of them, Laderia, carried Carleton to her marriage with John de Bellew, whose daughter, Sybil married Sir Miles de Stapleton (k. 1314, at the Battle of Bannockburn), whose family were subsequently designated 'of Carleton'. This appears to confirm the de Brus and de Pagnall of Carleton connection. Sir Miles Stapleton's son and heir, Sir. Gilbert (d. 1321) married Agnes, daughter of Bryan FitzAlan, Lord FitzAlan, and a granddaughter of Devorguilla of Galloway (d. 1290) wife of John de Balliol, Lord of Barnard Castle, whose son was King John of Scotland."

Some of Elizabeth's siblings updated their sir names from 'Gebhart' to 'Gephart'. Elizabeth married the farmer Jonathan S. Shell Sr. on 2 Nov 1832 in Miamisburg, Montgomery County, Ohio. Their union produced ten children; eight of these are known to have reached adulthood. About 1851 they relocated from Miamisburg, Montgomery Co., Ohio to a new farm homestead near Jefferson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Jonathan and Elizabeth were active in their local Lutheran Church. It was well known that their political views were democratic. Her 7 sons and son in-law shared the same religious and political views."

Ella was born on June 8, 1935 in Easton, the daughter of Harold E. and Ella M. (Flewelling) Kinney. She attended Zion Bible Institute and later, Northern Maine Technical College, where she earned a degree in Business Administration and worked for 25 years. Ella enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, making preserves and baking. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed nature, especially watching birds from her beloved home on the Boyd family farm. She was also a musician who sang, played several instruments and served her church family as organist. Ella's faith was also extremely important to her and she lived a life of service as a Sunday school teacher, church musician and special speaker. Ella is survived by her spouse of 59 years, Wallace V. Boyd of Mars Hill; her four Children, Winston A. Boyd and his wife Jan of Libertyville, Illinois, Wanda A. Jackins and her husband Kevin and Wendy L. Todd and her husband Perrin all of Mars Hill and Wanice L. Linn and her husband Tom of Dundee, Michigan; eight Grandchildren: Amber Wood and her husband Brian, Landon Jackins, Shannon Todd, Conor Todd, Josiah Jackins, Emily Boyd, Cameron Todd, and Nelson Boyd; and two Great-Grandchildren: Destiny and Alle Wood, sisters Ellouise Ackerman, Evangeline Hayden, Eva Ireland, Elaine Corsall and a brother Harold Kinney. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sister Elma Sjoberg."

[51440] Mildred's obituary: "Steuben - Mildred E. (Torrey) McManus, 82, passed away July 21, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 4, 1923, in Winter Harbor, the daughter of James and Ora (Leighton) Torrey. Mildred attended Winter Harbor Grammar School, and Winter Harbor High School, where she played basketball and belonged to the 4-H Club. After high school, Mildred married and moved to Milbridge, where she raised her two sons, Lawrence and Gary Ray. Story after story can be told of her love for her sons and the fabulous memories she had of raising them. Mildred spent many years working at the L. Ray Packing Co., a sardine cannery, and there she managed the employee restaurant. After her sons were grown, she moved to North Reading, Mass., where she worked for 17 years as a computer technician at Compugraphic. In 1989, she and her husband, Linwood McManus, returned to Maine to be closer to family. Mildred loved spending time motorcycling and snowmobiling and she even enjoyed her first kayak ride on the Narraguagus River just a few years ago. She was an amazing cook, and will be remembered forever for her delicious peanut butter balls. She also had a sense for fashion and never went anywhere without looking her best. Just as she showered her friends and family with love, so did she shower love on her cat., Tinsel, and her parrot, Kramer. She was never afraid to speak of her pride in her family, and she was known to boast about how incredibly smart her animals were. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 36 years, Linwood 'Bub' McManus, her son Lawrence Ray and his wife, Drusilla, of Milbridge, her son Gary Ray and his wife, Paula, of Milbridge; grandchildren Stuart Ray, Joan Ray, Brittany Ray, Jeremy Ray and Ben Ray; great-grandchildren Bayley, Tommy and Joseph Ray-Smith, Allexis, Shailyn and Tylor Martin; sister and best friend, Virginia Dyer and her husband, Peter; stepson Lawrence McManus and his wife, Dawn, of Addison; stepson Roy McManus of Massachusetts; stepson Charles McManus and his wife, Cheryl, of Milbridge; special niece, Dixie Dyer of Clinton; special nephews Owen Dyer of York and Ricky Dyer of Jacksonville, Fla.; step grandchildren Amy Pinkham, Chris McManus, Lacey McManus, Katie McManus, Misty McManus, Ashley Partridge and Mitchell Partridge; step great grandchildren Landon and Emily; lifelong friend, Charlene Coffin; special friends Carl Moffatt, Ray and Edna Barnum; a special caregiver, Shirley Newenham; and many nieces and nephews.
