[7274] William was the last surviving pensioner of the War for Independence in New England, and next to last in the nation. See "William Hutchins and the American Revolution", Wilson Museum Bulletin (Castine, ME - Winter 1984), 2:29. He helped carry the first log that was used in building the southeast bastion of Fort George in 1779. Penobscot V.R. gives his death date as 3 May 1866 and lists the children shown here. "A Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary War Services...," (Washington: Blair and Rives, 1841 - published by Act of Congress) lists William, age 75 in 1840, as residing in Penobscot, ME. William m. (2) widow Mary Saunders Ames (who d. 1 Feb 1866 at Penobscot). He was a captain and master mariner. See "Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 4," Joseph Crook Anderson II and Louis Ware Thurston, editors (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1994), p. 314. See http://www.one-barton-family.us/genealogy/viva/d2400.html (not verified). "History of York, Maine," Charles Edward Banks (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967), Vol. 1, p. 430 reports: "He was a master mariner, engaged in coastwise trading, lumbering and farming." A photo of his house is printed in "The centennial of Castine : an account of the exercises at the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of the town, July 9th, 1896" (Castine, ME: Town Library), p. 30. http://genealogytrails.com/main/lastveteranobits.html#hutchins reports: "William Hutchins -- Born in York, Maine in 1764, and died May 3, 1866, aged 102 years. He enlisted at New Castle, Maine, 1780-1, in the Massachusetts regiment commanded by Colonel Samuel McCobb. The 4th of July previous to his decease, he attended the celebration of that day at Bangor, in which he was an active participant." Also see the article about his son, with extensive information about William, by Mark E. Honey in "Castine Patriot" (Castine, ME), 8 July 2010, p. 5, which reports he joined Capt. Benjamin Lemmond's Co. in Newcastle, ME (where he family had gone during the hostilties), mustering on 26 June 1781. William Hutchings is subject of an extensive article in The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 4 July 1975, p. 12. Cf. "Hugh Hutchins of Old England," Jack Randolph Hutchins and Richard Jasper Hutchings (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1984), pp. 699 & 707.

Virginlia Horler notes:
900 Census in Oakand, Alameda, California ED 370 Page 3B: living with mother and two siblings, stenographer.
1910 Census in Oakland, Alameda, California Ward 7, ED 138 page 162: Sarah L. Powell, single, lived with widowed mother and brother Horace F. (enumerated elsewhere) on Hillsborough Street. She was a stenographer for a paper company.
The 1920 Census for Oakland, CA lists Sarah L. Palmer, age 36, living with her Mother, Elizabeth C. Palmer. Sarah was working as a stenographer for a public agency.
In 1930, the Census indicates that Sarah's Mother had died and that Sarah, age 45, was the head of the household. She was employed as a stenographer at the University (probably the University of California at Berkeley). The value of the real estate was $8,000 which would indicate that the home was larger than most in that area. Sarah's aunt, Henrietta Steere, a widow age 70, was living there as well.
Henrietta, born in 1860 in (English) Canada, could be either A. W. Palmer or his wife (Elizabeth H. Call)'s sister; however I think it most likely she is the sister of George M. Annie Mary, and Alpheus W. Palmer. I think that the children's parents, George F. and Sarah Jane Palmer died in Woodstock, Carleton County, New Brunswick in 1859 and 1864 respectively. Willis Hart Palmer named a daughter Henrietta Elizabeth, and there were no Henriettas in his wife's family.

[16120] http://www.medsca.org/olaf/frameset.html reports in 2002: "Harald Grenske was slain in approximately 996 AD, and Åsta soon after remarried to a petty king called Sigurd Sýr of Oplandene. Oplandene is the inland districts north of Viken, a location that is rather uncertain due to the size of it. Whether this is Ringerike or not, we can't be absolutely sure about, but a contemporary conserved source, the scald Sigvat, describes the beginning of the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030 AD. He called King Olaf the 'Hringa gramr', which literally means 'Prince of Ringerike' or perhaps rather 'Prince of the Hringarí tribe'. This would certainly account for Ringerike. Along Åsta and Sigurd, Olaf also had a foster father called Hrane the Far-Sighted. Having a foster father was a common thing to have amongst the Scandinavian aristocracy at that time. A foster father's mission was merely to protect and teach someone of high rank." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigurd_Syr.
