Harry m. Dec. 30, 1956 Lanore Ava Anderson and had at Emmetsburg, IA Mary Elizabeth Thumma (June 24, 1959; m. Aug. 7, 1982 Paul Ketelsen), Samuel Anderson Thumma (May 2, 1962) and John Carl Thumma (Jan. 17, 1967). Harry's obituary: "H. Russell Thumma, age 80, passed away on November 15, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. H. (Harry) Russell Thumma, son of Harry Robert and Laura Belle Russell Thumma was born July 20, 1929, on the family farm northeast of Laurens, Swan Lake Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa. He was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal Church parsonage in Redfield, Iowa. He graduated as valedictorian from Laurens Consolidated School in 1947. Russell received a Bachelor of Science degree having the highest grade point in his class in Agronomy at Iowa State College (now University) in 1951. He belonged to Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honor societies. He completed his Master of Science degree in Soil Management in 1957 attending Winter quarters. His Masters thesis was Moisture and Temperature Relationships in Wide Row Corn Interplanted with Forage. The field work for the thesis was done on the home farm. He had enough graduate credit hours for a minor in Statistics. Russell played the French horn in the ISC symphony and band. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict as Roads and Grounds Officer at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. He was united in marriage on December 30, 1956 to Lanore Ava Anderson. To this union, three children were born. He farmed, first, with his father, Harry, and later with his son, John. Russell and Lanore moved into Laurens in 1998. Russell continued to farm with John until 2006. Russell was a member of the Laurens United Methodist Church, serving on several committees including Chairman of Administrative Council. For many years, Russell sang in the Church Choir, sang solos, in Funeral Quartets and sang solos for many funerals. He was a 50 year member of Grace Lodge #519, having served as worshipful Master, and was a Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Brass Band for a couple of decades. Russell was Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #265. He served several terms as Soil Conservation District Commissioner, holding most offices and honored for his service by the Iowa Association of Conservation Districts in 1986. He enjoyed his service on the Laurens Public Library Board since 1999. His hobbies, included Photography, Computer, Woodworking, and most importantly Thinking. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors are his wife Lanore, daughter Mary (Paul) Ketelsen of Grand Mound, sons Sam (Barb Dawson) of Phoenix, AZ and John of Laurens, grandchildren Christina and Carl Ketelsen, and Nicole Thumma."
