Oliver Ames, son of Capt. John and Susannah (Howard) Ames, was born April ll, 1779, in West Bridgewater, Mass. He received but an ordinary common school education, which with practical experience in the blacksmith shop of his father furnished him the ground work of a sober judgment, industrious habits, and a stable and energetic character. At the age of eighteen he went to Springfield, Mass., where his elder brother, David, then resided, to learn the trade of gunsmith. Oliver Ames continued there until the close of his brother's term as superintendent of the Armory; in 1802, and then returned to Bridgewater and engaged with his father in the manufacture of shovels. At the very beginning of the, nineteenth century, and very soon after his marriage, he removed from Bridgewater to the town of Easton, and began the manufacture of shovels and hoes. On Aug. 1, 1803, he purchased the Shovel Shop pond privilege and moved to Easton the following year, building the first factory for the manufacture of the
famous Ames shovels. After three years there he moved to Plymouth to manufacture shovels for Messrs. Russell, David & Co. However, he retained his property and
business in Easton, carrying on there the manufacture of hoes and shovels, and was also one of the partners in the cotton factory managed by Col. David Manley. He returned to Easton in 1811. In those early days he was beset with embarrassments and difficulties that would have disheartened and defeated anyone but a man of persistent energy, and great ability. The effect upon business of the war of 1812 was still felt; the cotton factory had been burned; he. was endeavoring to restore the business of his father to a prosperous condition, and had made great outlays in getting established in Easton. But his credit was good and his courage strong; his character and ability alike inspired unlimited confidence, and he worked steadily on a sure and lasting success. His business in time became by far the largest and most prosperous shovel business in the world. He never would permit any work to be sent to the market that was imperfect, and he thus laid the foundation for the great reputation which the Ames shovel has borne and which it continues to bear. In 1844 he retired from active business, transferring the active management to his sons Oakes and Oliver, under the firm name of Oliver Ames & Sons.
Mr. Ames was a man of strong and resolute will, of great force of character, indomitable energy, and persevering industry. He possessed a splendid physique,
and easily bore off the palm in all feats of strength and skill, especially in wrestling, of which he was very fond. His manly and dignified bearing gave all who saw him the impression that they looked upon a man of mark. Born of the people, he was always very simple in his tastes, as well as democratic in his feelings and principles. He was equally decided in his likes and dislikes; but his judgment of persons was based upon what he believed to be the real worth of anyone, without reference to station or condition. He was consequently greatly respected and beloved by his neighbors and townsmen.
Mr. Ames was no lover of office, being ambitious alone to have the charge of the highways of his town intrusted to him; yet he was a number of times honored by his fellow townsmen, being elected in 1828, 1833, and 1834 to the Massachusetts Legislature, and served with marked ability upon the committee on Manufactures. Contrary to his desires he was elected in 1845 and by a large vote to the Massachusetts Senate.
In his religious faith Mr. Ames was a decided Unitarian, and the founder of the Unitarian Society of Easton, and he was liberal in his aid to religious institutions. He gave largely to charities.
In April, 1803, Mr. Ames married Susan Angier, who was born March 8, 1783, daughter of Oakes Angier (Harvard, 1763), an eminent barrister of his day. Through her maternal grandfather, Edward Howard, she was a direct descendant of John Winslow, a brother of Gov. Edward Winslow and uncle of Gov. Josiah Winslow; John Winslow married Mary Chilton, of "Mayflower" stock. She was a great-great-granddaughter of Rev. Urian Oakes, president of Harvard College, 1675-81, a direct descendant of Rev. Dr. William Ames, the eminent divine, author, theological controversialist and professor in the University of Francker, in Friesland. Dr. Ames's daughter, Ruth, after his death came with her mother and brother to New England, where she married Edmund Angier, of Cambridge, and their son, Rev. Sam- [transcribers note - there seems to be something missing here, although all the pages are present in the book] able and honorable man. His name was felt to be a sufficient indorsement of the worth and promise of any enterprise.
Business cares were not allowed to engross all of Mr. Ames's attention. He continued to the last his interest in literature, kept himself familiar with the great questions that agitate thought and life, enjoyed the society of cultivated persons, and often surprised them by the clearness and comprehensiveness of his carefully formed opinions. In his character there were blended an admirable simplicity and a most cordial fellow feeling with a real dignity and refinement. He was noted for his generosity. No help was denied any object that commanded his confidence; but he shrank from all publicity in his benefactions. He had a high sense of honor, that was prompt to rebuke anything mean and dishonorable. He was not only a philanthropic but also a deeply religious man. Many of his benefactions have not been disclosed, but those he was known to have bestowed were most wisely made, and are doing a good that is incalculable. He gave a fund of $50,000 each for the schools, the roads and a free public library. He built and gave a beautiful church to the Unitarian Society. Besides these may be mentioned his gift of the Village cemetery, of Unity Church parsonage, and two other bequests to keep the church, parsonage and cemetery in repair.
On June 12, 1833, Mr. Ames married Sarah, born Sept. 23, 1812, daughter of Hon. Howard and Sally (Williams) Lothrop, of Easton. She died Feb. 28, 1890. Their children were: Frederick Lothrop Ames, born June 8, 1835; and Helen Angier Ames, born Nov. 11, 1836, who died Dec. 13, 1882. Oliver Ames died March 9, 1877, at North Easton, Massachusetts.

[51065] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]. 20 August 2013": "Donna Barter Billings passed away peacefully at the Deer Isle Nursing Home, Aug. 15, 2013, on a sunny morning as the hermit thrushes were singing. She was born June 17, 1927, in Rockland. She was the daughter of Charlotte Lufkin Haskell and Arthur C. Barter. The family moved to North Haven, where her father was a caretaker until Donna was 5 years old. At that time, they moved to Deer Isle and her father purchased the M.D. Joyce Co. and Hardware Co. in 1932. She graduated from McKinley High School as valedictorian in 1945. She attended Colby College, graduating in 1949 with a major in history and a minor in English. She continued her education at Husson College for another year. After teaching locally for a short time, she met and married John Jackson Billings of Stonington in February 1950. In the span of 20 years, her husband 'Jack' and she would take over and manage the M.D. Joyce Co. and Barter Lumber Co. that was started by her father, Arthur Barter. As she would often say, 'I grew up at my father's store, standing on a wooden box in order to run the cash 'register and total the amounts on a brown paper bag.' She enjoyed working with the public at the store throughout her life. Her outgoing personality and smile would always brighten other people's day. Donna and Jack enjoyed traveling abroad on several trips with friends, indulging in her love of history. Later in life, she would experience debilitating health issues. She was a strong person, never complaining and pressed on. She loved Deer Isle, its people, her family and her friendships deeply. In later years, she found great pleasure watching the deer, ducks and ducklings that visited her backyard pond, birds at her feeders; and her beloved dog, 'Mary Margaret.' Donna was a generous person giving many gifts to others and supporting many local organizations and charities. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia A. Billings; sons, Arthur Jackson Billings, and his wife, Diane, and Dana Billings and his wife, Bobbi. Patricia Murray gave her such joy and whom she considered a second daughter. She was a loving grandmother to the four grandchildren, Sara, Lori, Anne, Blake; and one great-grandson, Jackson. She cherished his many visits bringing so much joy to her. She is also survived by dear friends and constant companions, Andrea Gray and Phyllis Pemberton. Two days prior to her death, she stated that 'God had sent Phyllis to her.' While Donna was in her home, Andrea Gray was her companion. As Andrea was much younger, she brought out that youthful, fun side of Donna. They enjoyed many laughs and shopping trips for supplies."

[51400] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 29 June 2015": "Castine - Laura Gray Hatch, 95, died June 23, 2015 in Camden, Maine. She was born to Henry and Minnie Clement Gray on Nov. 30, 1919, in Hardwick, Vt., where her father had relocated the family to work as a granite cutter. Laura moved with her family back to their home on the Bagaduce River in Penobscot when she was a young girl. She was educated in Penobscot, graduated from Clark High School and attended the Eastern State Normal School where she met her husband, Merton 'Spunk' Hatch. They were married in 1939. Laura, who began her career as a teacher, took her first political plunge in 1960 when she was elected town tax collector in Castine. Since there were no offices in the Town Hall, people came to her home at all hours of the day and night to pay their taxes and register their cars, a system that worked well as she was also busy raising four sons at the time. Laura served as town tax collector for more than 30 years and on her retirement in the early 1990s, the Castine selectmen designated Jan. 28 as Laura Hatch Day. Always an active member of the community, she was past president of the Castine Womans Club and an honorary director of the Castine Historical Society, she served as a member of the Castine Cemetery Committee, the Mary Cushman Circle and a was longtime member of the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine. In her younger years, she could often be found playing doubles on the tennis court or traveling the country visiting family and friends. She was known to start a conversation with a stranger wherever she went. Lauras strong character and determination never diminished. Laura was predeceased by her husband, her brother Harold Gray, and her eldest son Harold Babcock Hatch. She is survived by her sons, Stephen of North Andover, Mass.; James of Prospect; David (Susan) of Castine; daughter-in-law Andrea of Castine and Colorado Springs, Colo.'Grammie/Gram/Miggie' was a devoted grandmother to her nine grandchildren, James (Amy) of Tacoma, Wash.; Sarah Hatch-Wright (Fred), Mark (Anne), all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Marc of Sparks, N.Y.; Marcie Bradley (Devin) of Truckee, Calif.; James (Teri) of Bangor; Matthew (Stacey) of Pittsfield; Betsy Libby (Jason) of New Gloucester, and Joshua (Vanessa) of Sedgwick. She also leaves 15 great-grandchildren who made her smile, Wesley Wright, Adabelle Wright, Katherine Hatch, Heather Hatch, Shauna Hatch, Moriah-May Hatch, AJ Hatch, Jonathan Hatch, Emelyn Hatch, Carter Libby, Jackson Libby, Jameson Hatch, Ellery Bradley, Oakley Hatch and Sarah Hatch."

http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/RUSSELL.htm (not verified) offers these notes: "Other pedigrees (from unreliable sources) centre on Theobald Russell (d. 1340) of Yaverland in Isle of Wight, Kingston Russell in Dorset, and Horsington in Somerset. One reference states that the grandfather of this Theobald was a common ancestor of the Earls and the Dukes of Bedford. Other references state that the Earls of Bedford descended from a son of Theobald's second marriage. Most of these references 'appear to agree' on Theobald's ancestry. Theobald Russell, he is said to have married twice. First wife was Eleanor Gorges, daughter and heiress of Sir Ralph De Gorges. By Eleanor he had three sons, his heir Ralph, William (died sp) and Theobald who assumed the name of Gorges after inheriting from his mother. Theobald's second wife is said to be Eleanor De la Tour, daughter of John De la Tour, by whom he had a son William. William Russell, son of Theobald and Eleanor, married the daughter and heiress of Muschamp. They had a son Henry Russell who married the daughter and co-heir of John Herring. Henry had a son James Russell who was the father of John. (There is no mention of Stephen Russell, apparently a proven ancestor, or of his wife Alice, also a proven ancestor.)"
Bearing in mind that Stephen Russell was Member of Parliament for Weymouth in 1394/5, also was a Thomas Russell who was Member of Parliament for adjacent Melcombe in 1384/5 and 1389/90, and a William Russell who was Member of Parliament for Melcombe in 1340/1 and taxed at the same place in 1367/8.
