Samuel and Zoe had Don Owen Brillhart, an educator - b. 6 July 1879 in Kendallville, IN, d. 24 Jan 1961 in Berkeley CA, who m. in 1897 Jennie Anthea McKeever (b. 2 Dec 1880 in Geen Center, IN, d. 21 March 1961 in Berkeley, CA).

Tad Brillhart shared 30 Oct 2007:

"I put together the descendants of my great, great grandfather, Christian Brillhart (1805-1885) through the children of his children, including my great grandfather Samuel B. Brillhart (1842-1926), and grandfather Don Owen Brillhart (1879-1961). The dates of Christian's children I obtained from a ledger that Sam kept, that was used as a business ledger for the grain mill that he ran in Kendallville, Indiana from 1872 to 1890. He ran the mill, called Grove Mills, from the 1860's (don't know the exact dates) with two of his brothers - Jacob and Andrew. In 1872 he bought out his brothers and ran the mill as sole owner until 1890 when it burned down. I have an old lithograph of the mill done at some point when he was the owner. On the roof of the mill in large letters it says - S. B. BRILLHART.

"In regard to a couple of the children of Christian - the boy 'San', I am not sure if this was a name, or possibly the word 'son',
since he died the day he was born, and may not have been given a name, just the designation "son". And, the girl Sarah Ellen, had her death date on the wrong line in the list of names and dates Sam wrote in the ledger, of his parents and siblings. I'm pretty sure the date is correct though, but I put a question mark just in case more information shows up on her. She was also called 'Elly'.

"On my grandfather, Don O. Brillhart, I found out some more information on him just a couple of weeks ago. He moved that family from Danville, Illinois, to Visalia, California in 1906, according to my cousin, Bruce, who was the only child of Don's daughter, Grace - my father's sister, who died the day after Bruce was born here in Berkeley in 1926. Don and his wife had just the two [adopted] children. My cousin said he had had a law practice in Danville, but it wasn't doing well, which prompted the move. They lived in Visalia until the Fall of 1911, when they moved to Martinez, California, where Don became the second principal of Alhambra High School there - the school was founded in 1903. What I learned recently was the Don also taught school, probably high school, in Visalia, and became the principal of Visalia High School from 1909 to 1911. This I learned from a friend who moved to Visalia a couple of years ago, and looked up that information for me earlier this month. Previously, I hadn't know what my grandfather did there in the 5 years they lived in Visalia. I had assumed he probably was a teacher, but this is the first confirmation of that fact.

"Sam and his wife lived in Kendallville until sometime in the 1908 era, and then moved to Riverside, Illinois, where his wife was
brought up, although she is listed as being born in Canton, Ohio, the same as most of the Brillharts of that generation in my family. I don't know when her family moved to Riverside, but they seemed to be doing well there. They were in the grocery business as far as I can tell, and have some letters on Owens stationary, that indicates they owned something called the Owens Block, which may have been a large store, or a business block in Riverside. Sam and his wife lived in Riverside until 1922 when the moved to Berkeley, Calif., where his son Don and family had been living since they moved to Berkeley from Martinez in the latter part of 1918, or early 1919, when their son, my father, started in at the Univ. of California in Berkeley in the Fall of 1918. My grandfather had been principal of Alhambra High School from the Fall of 1911, until the finish of the Spring Term in 1918. After that, he had been recruited by the YMCA, along with other prominent men in Martinez, and, I'm sure, from around the country, to go over to Paris, to set up 'wholesome' activities for the soldiers who were coming back to Paris from the front lines. I have a picture of my grandfather in his YMCA uniform, and the identification certificate that he was issued for
his time overseas. The certificate is dated in late October, 1918, just a few weeks before the Armistice in November. So, he wasn't 'Over There' very long before the war ended, but I guess he had a little time to see Paris. Perhaps he discovered why you couldn't keep them down on the farm after they saw Paree!! Anyway, they soon moved from Martinez after he came back. My dad and his sister were students at Alhambra when their dad was principal there. Sam and his wife bought a house at 1026 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley in 1922. Sam passed away in 1926, and wife Zoe in 1931, after which time, son Don moved his family into that house, and lived there until his and his wife's death in 1961. After their daughter Grace died in 1926, Don and his wife raised their grandson Bruce until he went into the service in 1944. Bruce's father lived in Oakland, Calif. - just next door to Berkeley, and didn't really seem to have a lot to do with Bruce's upbringing, although they were on good terms as far as I ever saw over the years. My father had moved out in 1925, when he was married to my mother. My father graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1923, and started his teaching career in the Fall of 1923 over at Commerce High School in San Francisco, and was there until the school was closed in 1952, and made into the school district headquarters. After that he taught at Mission High School until he retired in 1964. He was a coach of several athletic teams at Commerce, and later taught math classes at Mission High.

"After grandfather Don Brillhart and family moved to Berkeley, he started teaching at McClymonds High School in Oakland, Calif. and was there into the mid-1940's. He also had a law office in the American Trust Company building in downtown Berkeley for many years, doing a general law practice. The building is now the Wells Fargo Building at Center and Shattuck Aves. He was also listed as teaching at a high school in Oakand in 1927 called Part Time High School - just for that one year. I recently discovered a little history of that school. In the latter part of the 'teens' in California, the legislature passed what was called the 'Part Time Law', which said that all children of high school age had to go to school at least 4 hours a day. Apparently, there were many children who had either dead parents, or ones that were disabled, and the children often went
to work full time to help the family. The legislature mandated that they must go to school too - part time. So, this was the reason for the building of Part Time High School in Oct. 1920. I don't know how my grandfather happened to teach there for that one year, and I suppose I never will. It's possible he had something to do with the music at the school. It was discovered early on at the school that there were a number of musically talented kids at Part Time, so they started to form an orchestra there in the first few years. My grandfather played the violin, and had performed on it when he was principal at Alhambra High School - something I found out when I went through the yearbooks from Alhambra at the historical society for Martinez some years ago."

Tertullus D'Anjou, Count of GATENAIS

  1. +Ingelgerius ("Ingelgar"), Count of ANJOU

INDEX

[2208] Alison Weir, "Eleanor of Aquitaine" (NY: Ballantine, 1999), p. 416, states that he is Tortulf "the woodsman" (semi-mythical). For purported ancestry, see http://www.mathematical.com/anjoutertulle821.html

Some say he is son of Conrad of Burgundy, Count of Paris, but W.H.Turton, "The Plantagenet Ancestry" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1968), p. 6, states that Hugues l'Abbi (d. 844) is father of Tertullus d'Anjou, and that Hughes l`Abbi is a son of Charlemagne and Regine. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Ed., 1:976: "...towards 861, Charles the Bald entrusted [the county of Anjou] to Robert the Strong, but he unfortunately met with his death in 866.... Hugh the Abbot succeeded him in the countship of Anjou as in most of his other duties, and on his death (886) it passed to Odo, the eldest son of Robert the Strong, who, on his accession to the throne of France (888), probably handed it over to his brother Robert. In any case, during the last years of the 9th century, in Anjou as elsewhere the power was delegated to a viscount, Fulk the Red, son of a certain Ingelgerius." [46107] "Biographical review : containing life sketches of leading citizens of Somerset, Piscataquis, Hancock, Washington, and Aroostook counties, Maine (1898)", pp. 201-202: "Captain George Wescott, a retired ship-master of Castine, Han cock County, was born upon his present farm, August 27, 1830, son of Captain Joseph and Sarah (Dyer) Wescott: This farm was originally cleared from the wilder-ness by William Wescott, the great-grandfather of Captain Wescott. William, a native of York, Me., came here as a pioneer, and bought a tract of two hundred and fifty acres when settlers were few and game abundant, while the only means of transportation was by water, and a tribe of Indians inhabited the neighborhood. Upon a site about ten rods distant from Bagaduce Point he built a dwelling that was his home for the rest of his life. He married Elizabeth Perkins, a daughter of a neighboring settler. Joseph Wescott, son of William and a na-tive of Castine, for some years followed the sea in the foreign trade: and he served in the War of 181 2 as Captain of a company. Having inherited the homestead, he built the present spacious residence, which is one of the best in town. He died in 1831, and was buried in the old family cemetery upon the farm. His wife was before marriage Lucy Stover, of Penobscot. Captain Joseph Wescott, the father, was born and reared at the homestead. Like most of the young men of his day, he took naturally to seafaring. In clue time he became a master mariner, and was engaged in the foreign trade for some years. After abandoning the sea he settled at the homestead, and built another house on the premises, which he occupied for the rest of his life. He lived to be eighty-three years old. He served as a Selectman for many years, and was one of the first abolitionists in Castine. Sarah, his wife, became the mother of eight children, five of whom are living, namely: George, the subject of this sketch; Mary W., who is now Mrs. Brooks; Clara Emerson; Frances Dyer; and Martha W. Wescott. George Wescott was educated in the common and high schools of Castine. Having begun to follow the sea at an early age, he worked his way aft to the quarterdeck, and subsequently commanded vessels engaged in the East India trade until his retirement in 1870. He served in the Civil War for one year as First Sergeant of Company I, Twenty-eighth Regiment, Maine Volunteers, with which he participated in the sieges of Port Hudson, Donaldsonville, and other engagements. Since he succeeded to the home farm, which contains one hundred and five acres, he has conducted it energetically. Recently he made some improvements in the old residence built by his grandfather. By his marriage with Mary Avery, Captain Wescott became the father of four children George F., Elisha D., Mary J., and Paul W. George F., who resides in Buffalo, N.Y., married Mary F. Bent, and has three children - Otis B., Mary E., and Marion. Elisha D., now residing in Portland, Me., married Josephine Crawford, and has one daughter, Ruth A. Paul W., also a resident of Port-land, married Annie C. Pennell, and has one son, Allen Wescott. Captain Wescott has served acceptably as a Selectman and a mem-ber of the School Board. Politically, he is a Republican, and his first Presidential vote was cast for J. C. Fremont in 1856. He is a comrade and Past Commander of Charles L. Stevens Post, No. 76, G. A. R."
