"The Conquering Family," Thomas B. Costain (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1949, chapter 3) is a popular account of William, his family and their era. He is buried under the central tower of St. Swithin Church, Winchester. He was a large man with curly blond hair and a ruddy complexion ("rufus"). Costain
calls him (p. 30) "cruel, false, avaricious, and with no sense of the responsibilities of a ruler."
----- Compton's Encyclopedia (America On-Line, 1995):
"William II, Rufus (born about 1056, ruled 1087-1100), was called Rufus (Red) because he had a ruddy complexion. His father, William I, had divided his
lands before his death. He gave Normandy to his eldest son, Robert, and England to William, his second son. In 1096 William received Normandy from
Robert, to whom he had lent large sums of money for the First Crusade.
"Rufus "was hated by almost all his people," says the old Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, "and abhorred by God." "He every morning got up a worse man than he lay down and every evening lay down a worse man than he got up." He aroused the wrath of the church because of his practice of selling church offices or keeping them unoccupied so that he might take their revenue for himself.
"Once when he fell sick and thought he was dying, William vowed to turn from his evil ways and fill the archbishopric of Canterbury, which he had kept vacant for four years. His choice fell on Anselm, abbot of Bec in Normandy, who was the greatest theologian of the age. Against church rules, William insisted upon conferring the symbols of office himself, instead of allowing the pope to do it. Anselm took a firm stand against this "lay investiture" of the clergy, but finally he tired of wrangling and went to Rome. William then again seized the property of the archbishopric.
"William's life came to a sudden end while he was hunting in the New Forest, a great treat of woodland that his father had set aside for his favorite sport. He was killed by an arrow; and it is not known who drew the bow. It was probably an accident. His younger brother Henry, who was in the hunting party, left Rufus' body where it lay and hurried to Westminster to seize the royal treasure and the throne. He succeeded William as Henry I."

The "Rufus Stone" in the New Forest is not the actual site of his death, which experts now believe is near Througham. See the historical novel by Edward
Rutherfurd, "The Forest" (New York: Crown Publishers, 2000).

[18361] "Lykens Register [Lykens, PA], 26 December 1902," p. 1: "Harry Matter, son of Beneviile and Franica Matter, was found dead at his home near the paper mill, on Saturday afternoon. He occupied a two room house, built according to his own plans, and it was there that he was found lying on the floor dead by Isaac Grell. As soon as he made the discovery he summoned J. R. Fisher and J. A. Kull, who were at the paper mill. They went to the house, and looked, and found the statement true. His death was due to suffocation, caused by asthma, from which he suffered for many years. Deceased was born near Elizabethville on January 16, 1846, and was baptized on March 1, 1846, by Rev. Hemping. His age was 56 years, 1 1 months and 4 days. The death of Harry Matter removes a familiar and picturesque figure from Lykens. He was known by every man, woman and child in the town. He was a 'jack of all trades,' and whenever help in any line of business was needed Harry was sent for. The body was removed to the home of Otto Long, a brother-in-law of the deceased, where the funeral was held on Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. J. R. Groff, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church."
[55529] Ella is daughter of Joseph Warren Oakes (b. in 1851) & Almeda M. Allen (b. in 1856; m. 12 September 1874).
