[820] There is a relationship between John and Francis Symonds, Deputy-Governor when Maine was part of Mass. The Symonds family supposedly descends from Adam FitzSimon, second son of Simon, Lord of Saint Sever in Normandy (d.1090, buried in the Church of St. Sever), who held lands in Norfolk and Herts. John Symond(s), Jr. came to America with his children in 1636, settling at Salem. He was a joiner and cooper; was a freeman in 1637; was excused from ordinary militia training in 1648 for lameness; served as a grand juror in 1657. His will 16 Aug 1671, proved 19 Sept 1671 provides for his wife, Elizabeth, who survived him, and four children. John was baptised 09 Oct 1594 at North Walsham, Co. Norfolk, 5-1/2 miles west of the coastal town of Walcott where he married his first wife, Ruth Foxe; he and Ruth had their six children baptised at St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, a coastal port about 21 miles SSE of North Walsham. In Salem, Mass. John resided before 1652 on North Street where the Upland School was located, and previous to that on the western corner of St. Peter and Bridge streets. [See "English Origins of New England Families," 2nd series, volume 3, 1985; p. 456.] The ancestry shown here is not verified. A John Symonds will (Essex Co., MA Probate Records 1:1 - 16 June 1671) includes "...my loving wife, Elizabeth Symonds...son James...son Samuel...my daughter Kathern Towne...to the children of my deceased daughter Ruth Swinerton..." John Swinerton was a witness to the will. In the same Probate Records, 15:143B, for 11 March 1700?: "Rec'd of James Symonds, Exec. of the Last Will and Testament of our grandfather John Symonds dec'd tenn pounds due to us by said will paid to us." -signed Jasper Swinnerton, Joseph Swinnerton. See Wheeler, Dick. 'Symonds/Foxe Update', "About Towne" volume IX, number 2 (2 June 1989).
