[48142] "Globe-Gazette [Mason City, Iowa], 19 September 2000," p . 10: "Hansell - Funeral services for Verla (Ritzman) Penticoff will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hansell United Methodist Church in Hansell, with the Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen officiating. Burial will be at the Ingham Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Memorials may be directed to the family to be divided among North Iowa Hospice, cancer research and the Hansell United Methodist Church. Today we pay tribute to Verla (Ritzman) Penticoff, who was born on July 14, 1926, in Butler County. She was the daughter of Vern Sr. and Flossie (Truax) Ritzman. Verla was baptized on the 4th day of April, 1946. Verla was raised on a farm south of Dumont. She attended Clutterville rural school in Madison Township for eight years and graduated from Dumont High School in 1946. After graduation, during World War II, she worked in the hemp plant at Hampton. She also worked at the Marshall Canning Co. for several years and then at Davies Manufacturing Co. until she was married. On Feb. 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ray 'Jack' Penticoff at the United Methodist Church in Troy, Kan. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary this millennium year. To this union a daughter, Rita Mae, was born. Verla joined the Hansell United Methodist Church on the 4th day of March 1953 and attended there until her health prevented her from doing so. Verla and Jack farmed north of Hansell all their married life. Verla loved the outdoors, her flowers, gardening, mowing and helping out where needed. She enjoyed snowmobiling and motorcycling with friends in the area. Verla was a great helpmate to her husband and a wonderful mother. She taught Sunday school for 13 years. She also taught Bible school and enjoyed helping with the Hansell United Methodist Church functions. On Sunday the 17th day of September, 2000, Verla went to her heavenly home at the age of 74 years, two months and three days. Verla is survived by her husband, Jack; their daughter, Rita, and son-in-law, Trent Gerdes; and two granddaughters, Melanie and Morgan, of Waterloo; two brothers, Vern Ritzman, of Hampton and Harold Ritzman, of Nashua; two sisters, Marlis Nielsen, of Hampton and Audrey Stemmerman, of Allison. Her parents preceded her in death."
