[61638] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 7 March 2026: "Mattawamkeag, Maine - Edward J. 'Ricky' Richard Jr., age 79, passed away on March 3, 2026. He was born in Lincoln on February 27, 1947, the son of Edward J. "Eddie" Richard and Frances 'Honey' (Lounsbury) Richard. He was a lifelong resident of Mattawakeag and graduated from Mattawamkeag High School in 1965. After graduation he worked in his father's store, Richard's I.G.A., until he was drafted. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1966 to 1968 and then served four years on active reserve status. He served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Medal, Meritorious Unit Emblem, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge. After his service, he returned home and was employed by Great Northern Paper Co. in East Millinocket and all its successors for 43 years. He was a life member of Hamm-McGinley V.F.W. Post #7409 of Mattawamkeag and served as its commander from 1974 to `976. He also held just about every other office and program chairmanship during his almost 25 year involvement. He was instrumental in promoting and establishing sound financial fundraisers for the post, such as bingo nights, break-open ticket sales, annual auctions, raffles and the Springfield Fair Bingo operation. He was a firm believer in the organizations responsibility to the communities represented by its membership and played an important part in promoting programs such as teen dances, free use of the post home by scouting units, scholarships for students, sponsoring local student athletes to summer camps and donations to many area youth baseball and basketball teams. He was as well actively involved in the V.F.W. on the state and national level. He served five terms as commander of District #2 V.F.W. and Commander of the State of Maine V.F.W. in 1981 to 1982. Through the years he received many awards and citations in recognition of his dedication, leadership and involvement. He earned titles as an Outstanding District Commander and an All State Post Quartermaster. In 1979 he was selected by the National V.F.W. as one of six Outstanding Young Veterans in the nation, as well as being selected as an Outstanding Young American, a program sponsored by the Jaycee's of America. Throughout his life he was as well actively involved in the town of Mattawamkeag. He served several terms as selectman, secretary of the Mattawamkeag Development Assn., treasurer of the Mattawakeag Recreation Committee, terms as the town's Civil Defense Director and Conservation Commissioner. He also served many times as a member and chairman of the town's Budget Committee and as chairman of the town's 125th Anniversary Committee. He was most proud of serving as chairman of the Mattawamkeag Honor Roll Committee. He was actively involved in raising almost $30,000, and working through until completion and dedication of the Honor Roll in 2004. Rick always enjoyed riding through town in good weather with his windows down sharing his love of country and oldie music with all in earshot. He always had a bag of dog treats with him and would offer them to anyone he saw that had a dog with them in their vehicle, as well as stopping around town to treat his special furry friends. After his retirement he enjoyed helping out Galen and Jason at the Side Street Redemption in Keag. He was instrumental in pulling tabs off cans and urging patrons to do the same, which resulted in hundreds of thousands being donated to the Ronald McDonald House and Shriners Children's Hospital. He is survived by his wife, friend and lover of 57 years, Dawn (Thompson) Richard; his son, Edward J. 'Richie' Richard III of Mattawamkeag; two daughters, Nicole and her husband, James Hall, of Kentucky and Danielle Waroway of Hancock; a brother, Greg Richard and his wife, Arlette, of Chester; and two sisters, Connie Cahill of Portland and Barbara Fletcher and her husband, Michael, of New Hampshire. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Katelyn Everly and husband, Christian, and Emilee Hall and Kameron Waroway; as well as great-grandchild, Samuel Beckham Everly. He was predeceased by his brother, Laurence 'Larry' Richard; and sister, Beverly 'Birdie' Lemieux."
