[13833] George's draft registration 27 April 1941 states he is 49 years old, born 19 June 1892 in Greenbrier, Northumberland Co., PA, and is 5'11" tall and weighs 187 lbs. with sandy hair and light brown skin; it gives his wife as Verdie and his employer as W.P.A.; he resides in Rebuck, Washington Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. The 1930 census shows him in Upper Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co., PA with wife Verdie M. (age 36), daughters Helen C. (16) and Hilda (15), and son Woodrow (13) - the census lists George as a rural delivery postal carrier and reports that he m. at age 20 and Verdie m. at age 18. His draft registration for World War I indicates his employment as teacher in the Upper Mahanoy School District. See Find A Grave Memorial 39295662. The Daily Item, 23 April 1964, P. 10: George C. Mattern, 71. of Rebuck, died Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. at his home. A lifelong resident of Rebuck, he had been in failing health for the past two years. He was for many years a rural mail carrier in the Dornsife area and was last employed as a secretary for Mandate Poultry, Herndon, R. D. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Leck Kill. A son of the late Amos and Catherine Hornberger Mattern, he was born at Rebuck June 19, 1892. Surviving are his widow, Verdie Geist Mattern, and the following children; Helen, wife of Earl Snyder, Klingerstown, R. D.; Mrs. Hilda Kuhns, Dornsife, R.D., and Woodrow Mattern, of Rebuck. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
