[6396] Gleason L. Archer, "Ancestors and Descendants of Joshua Williams," gives 25-Jan-1819 as his birth date on p. 47 but 25-Dec-1819 as the date on p. 57! P. 47: Samuel was "an educated and talented man, a colonel in the Maine Militia. His house was more or less a centre of social life, for he was a skilled violinist. The bride from the wilderness quite naturally found herself out of her element in such surroundings. Her longing for her own people became so great that about 1860 Samuel Archer disposed of his home in Cherryfield and moved to Great Pond, where he lived the few remaining years of his life. He was an expert brick mason, but the wilderness community offered little opportunity for his skill. ...Samuel Archer died of Brights disease...." Samuel was buried in the John Archer Cemetery in Cherryfield according to Jack Colson (colsonjack@hotmail.com) in 2003, who lists his children: i. JOHN SEWALL ARCHER, b. June 16, 1851, Cherryfield, ME. ii. CLAUDIUS MELBOURNE ARCHER, b. July 04, 1853, Cherryfield, ME. iii. ADELAIDE ARCHER, b. May 01, 1855, Cherryfield, ME. iv. ISABEL ARCHER, b. September 23, 1856, Cherryfield, ME - buried in the John Archer Cemetery - Cherryfield, Lot #10, Grave #5.); d. June 15, 1858, Cherryfield, ME. v. VIENNA WILLEY ARCHER, b. October 25, 1859, Cherryfield, ME. vi. ELLA BELL ARCHER, b. February 09, 1861, Cherryfield, ME. vii. IDA MAY ARCHER, b. November 08, 1863, Cherryfield, ME. viii. LUCY EMILY ARCHER, b. December 1864, Cherryfield, ME. See http://emainehosting.com/Williams/documents/SCArcher_HWArcher.pdf for an account of Samuel's marriage with Harriet Williams and https://www.emainehosting.com/Williams/documents/Em_Archer_letterpdf.pdf for a letter to Samuel from his sister, Em, announcing the death of their father. The 2 July 1860 census of Great Pond, ME lists his household: Samuel Arher (39, mason), Harriet (29), John S. (10), Claudius M. (7), Alda M. (6) and Viana (1). Cf. "Early Narraguagus River Families of Washington County, Maine," Darryl B. Lamson and Leonard F. Tibbetts (Rockport, ME: Picton Press, 2002), p. 22.
