[39292] Altoona Times, 27 August 1890, p. 1: Adam J. Greer, a well-known printer and editor, and an old-time resident of this city, and one who enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances throughout Central Pennsylvania, died at his home, No, 1113 Fourteenth avenue, this city, yesterday morning at 9 55 o'clock. His death was the result of general debility and the end only came after a lingering sickness, Although the final result of his illness was to have been anticipated, it nevertheless brings a severe shock to those who knew him, and it is hard for them to realize that this venerable and respected citizen has passed from earthly scenes forever. Adam J. Greer was born on Friday, November 3, 1820, at Mann's ax factory, near Reedsville, Mifflin county, Pa. At this place and Brunn's Mills he enjoyed such meager school facilities as the times then afforded. In 1841 his parents moved to Lewistown, Pa., where he attended the academy in that place. In 1843 his father purchased the Lewistown Gazette, and in March of that year ho entered the office to learn the art of printing. He worked until September 1889, being then employed on the Tribune, owning, publishing, and editing papers at Lock Haven, New Berlin, Union county, Pa., Mifflintown, and this city. He enlisted in Company B, Captain Harry Wayne, Third Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the expiration of terra of enlistment. In 1803 he enlisted in Company F, Captain John P. Wharton, One Hundred and Twenty-sixth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was discharged December 24, 1802, by reason of disability, caused by rheumatism. For over forty years he had boon a continuous member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, having been initiated into Clinton Lodge, No. 98, at Lock Haven, April 23, 1850, and at the time of his death was a member of Lost Creek Lodge, I. O, O. F., Mifflintown, Pa. Ho was also member of the State Grand Lodge, and of Post G3, G. A. It. He was married on Christmas Day, December 25, 1849, to Miss Elizabeth Baird, of Academy, Juniata county, Pa., by the Rev. George Stevenson, of the Methodist Episcopal church. Besides his wife there survive him a son and daughter, Charles A. Greer, of this city, and Mrs. Lewis T. Hamilton, Jamestown, Dakota, one son Winfield S. having preceeded him to the grave, July 10, 1881. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters. Those are, John Greer, of Allensviile, Mifflin county; William, of Syberville, Mifflin county, Pa.; Robert S., of Sumansville, Potter county, Indiana; Mrs. Rachel 15. Carson, of Greenville, Mercer county, Pa; Mrs. Emily 15. Cochrane, of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Nancy N. Robinson, of Iowa Centre, Iowa, and Mrs. Sophia P. Murra, of Mifflintown, Pa. He is dead. To the silent, eternal realm of distance and of death he has passed away. The sole light that flames from the valley of shadows comes from the cross. He was a brilliant writer. Sometimes his earnestness in the vindication of a cause he had endorsed led him to extremes, but was all that was kind, humane, gentle manly and good, Ho was a common fountain of courtesy, and withal strong and earnest in his beliefs. A host of friends wish to his family the benediction of the Dear Master, and on his grave will many a forget-me -not die, the symbol of an affection that never forgets. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Thursday) afternoon at 4 o'clock. Services will be held at the late residence of the deceased, and interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.
