She was born in Shamokin, Pa., a daughter of the late Willard and Lula (Beaver) Mattern. Violet resided in Greenville, N.C. and was a retired administrative assistant from East Carolina University. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a secretary of local Greenville Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxillary, a former member of Sweet Adelines, and was a volunteer for the Battered Women's Shelter, Greenville. She supported many charities including ASPCA and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Violet had an avid love for music and art. She is survived by two sons, Gary Blackwelder and wife, Sharon, of Pooler, Ga., and Roger Blackwelder and partner, Lorraine Timlin, of Kingston, N.Y.; two daughters, Janis Tyson, and husband, Ray, of Charlotte, and Linda Bowen and husband, Terry, Plymouth, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held on May 28 in Kings Mountain. Interment will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington."
