[13272] Find A Grave Memorial 13429057 gives John's birth date as 5 March 1785. John and Catherine r. Pike Twp., Stark Co., OH at the 1850 census. The York Co., PA court records show a petition 14 May 1811 which resulted in an order 17 Sept 1811 that a John Brillhart pay the "widow and children" (mother and minor siblings?). Robert K. Nelson gives his (unverified) descendants in his Family Tree Maker online database (10/98) at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/n/e/l/Robert-K-Nelson/ODT2-0030.html. A note in Genealogy.com offers:"John Brillhart moved with his wife Catherine Dowe to Ohio some time in the 1820s. They already had three sons, Daniel, born abt. 1815, Jacob, born abt. 1817, and Peter, born abt. 1820, plus one daughter, Mary, born about 1819. They moved from York Co., Pennsylvania first to Seneca [is this the Seneca in Venango Co., PA?] where Moses was born, then to Canton, Stark Co., Ohio, finally settling in Pike Township, Stark Co., Ohio. After reaching there, Christian, and Peter, John's brothers, also moved to Stark Co., Ohio. Peter didn't stay long, moving on to Illinois, as did Barbara with her husband Daniel Horner." [But we know Daniel Horner died in Pennsylvania before Barbara moved on with her family.]

This was originally an ethnic name meaning 'Frank' and hence 'Frenchman'. The personal name owed much of its popularity during the Middle Ages to the fame of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), whose baptismal name was actually Giovanni but who was nicknamed Francisco because his father was absent in France at the time of his birth."

[24687] "Briner Family History," Myers and Clouse (Harrisburg, PA: 1984), pp. 344-45: "His biography is in Hain's 'History of Perry County.' He attended the public schools and later learned printing. He left Perry County in 1905 and worked as a priner in New Jersey, Connecticut and Philadelphia for about four years. In the autumn of 1909 he returned to New Bloomfield and attended the Bloomfield Academy until spring, when he went to Florida and located at Live Oak, as foreman of the 'Suwanee Democrat.' After two years he was made manager of the publication. He held this position four years, and then became manager of the 'Gadsen County Times' of Quincy, Florida. In 1918 he purchased this plant, and has since owned and edited the paper. When Cary A. Hardee became governor of Florida it was after his name had been first announced by Mr. Sweger, who has since been made a member of the governor's staff with rank of lieutenant colonel."
