She was born Nov. 1, 1920, the daughter of Harry and Inez (Smith) Haynes. Sylvia graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938, and lived in Ellsworth her entire life. Until her vision deteriorated, she enjoyed reading, quilting, card games and solving the crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper. She took great pleasure in playing the slot machines, which she was able to do until her 92nd birthday. Sylvia loved being with her family and spent many hours caring for her grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Brenda L. (Clarke) Pendergist, and her husband, James L. Pendergist, and Marilyn (Macy) Starling, and her husband, Roy Starling, all of Ellsworth. She is also survived by four loving grandchildren, Douglas J. Pendergist and his wife, Elizabeth, of Dillsburg, Pa.; Robert M. Pendergist of Sea Girt, N.J.; Sarah L. (Silsby) Mondragon and her husband, Joshua, of Denver, Colo., and Rebecca E. Silsby of Ellsworth. Great Gram 'GG' will be dearly missed by her eight great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Erin, Matthew and Abigail Pendergist of Dillsburg, Pa., Ryan Pendergist of Bar Harbor, and Bayley, James and Robert Pendergist of Sea Girt, N.J., as well as a nephew and several nieces. Sylvia was predeceased by her first husband, Robert W. Clarke, and her second husband, Harold S. Macy. She was also predeceased by her sister, Rachel (Haynes) Hutchins, and two brothers, Harvard and John Haynes."
