[4997] James succeeded his cousin Thomas as Earl of Moray. James was hostage for the king, 1424-27. James is only son of Alexander and Mauld (who in addition had two daughters). http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/british/dd/dunbar02.htm states: "BP1999 (Dunbar of Mochrum) reports that James was brother rather than cousin of the 3rd Earl." http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/a/r/J-H-Garner/FILE/0179page.html offers (not verified): "James Dunbar, Earl of Moray, b. circa 1399 Scotland; m. Isabel Innes, daughter of Sir Walter Innes Lord Innes and Euphemia Fraser; m. Catherine Gordon, daughter of Alexander Seton-Gordon Earl of Huntly and Elizabeth Crichton." A file in Ancestry.com in 2012 states James m. Janet Seton (b. 1401) and had Janet Dunbar, shown here as daughter - further research is needed. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Moray and http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.php?personID=I00370670&tree=LEO.
