He lived in Lubec, Washington, Maine, United States in 1880. He died on 12 June 1948, in Danforth, Washington, Maine, United States, at the age of 68, and was buried in Danforth, Washington, Maine, United States." The 1930 federal census in Danforth reports he is a laborer in a sawmill. "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 14 June 1948, p. 14: "Robert Averill Leighton died Saturday morning at the home of his son, Floyd Leighton, 44 Merrimac street after a long illness. He was born in Lubec but was a resident of Bangor for five years. He had been an employe of the Maine Central Railroad, retiring in 1947. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs, James Sitzes of Bangor; five sons, Gerald of Danforth, Ronald J. of Alaska, and Verdie, Robert and Floyd, all of Bangor; three brothers, Irving of Winthrop, Lewis of Rockport and Eugene of Lincoln."
