Find A Grave memorial 132769117 offers:
Isreal was born on Thursday June 28, 1685. It was on a Saturday Isreal had died. He was 62 years, 2 months, 12 days old. Nauset on Cape Cod, A history of Eastham Mass, By Alice Lowe. She tells about the will of Isreal Cole Jr. whose will was dated July 23, 1746 gave to his wife, his Negro man name Bacary and to his three daughters, Ebenezer, Emery and Hannah his Indian servant name Tom Trip.
Death: Well dated 23 July 1746, proved 9 Sept. 1747. Names "my beloved wife Emary Cole", Benjamin and Rufus "my sons" and my natural children " Ebenezer, Hannan Snow, Silvanus, Dorcas Burgis na Emery Cole. Daughter Hannah Snow received land purchased from Israel Higgins at Great Neck.
Burial: Israel is supposed to be buried in the Old Cove Cemetery at Eastham. In the 1940s, Louise Palen was there, and Alice Lowe the then town historian pointed out his approximate grave site. The stone is gone , or was recently as the 1900s. [ Info. from Mrgaret Sharp ]
Austin's MFTFG did not correctly print the abstract of his Will, missing this distinction between 'natural children' and " my sons."
One theory is that Israel had two wives, Emary being the second, and his "natural children" being from his first wife. One other variant of this theory is that Benjamin and Rufus were sons of Emary by her first marriage and adopted by Israel Cole. The naming of one natural daughter "Emery" may ndite a possible family connection between the two wives, perhaps they were sisters.
In support of these theories, Margaret Sharp reports to me that a late cousin, Louise Palen ( desc. of Nathaniel Cole Jr. though son James Henry Cole) wrote that she visited Eastham in the late 1940s and spoke with the then Eastham Town Historian about the children of Israel Cole II. Louise was told that Israel had two wives and that two of the sons went by the name Cole but that they were children of the second wife and adopted by Israel.
The other theory is that Emary was Israel's only wife and the mother of all his children, and that the usage of "natural" has some other connotation at the time that we are misinterpreting.
Margaret Sharp has pointed out that there is a good probability Israel may have had two wives. She said that Austin's Mayflower Families thru five generations, Vol. 6, edition 1 & 2, omits the detail about Israel Cole's Will, namely that he calls Benjamin and Rufus "my sons" and calls Ebenezer, Hannah, srael, Silvanus, Dorcas and Emery his " natural children ". It may be that the natural children were from a first wife and that Benjamin and Rufus were children of Emery and the rest were of his first wife. The naming of one of the " natural " children Emery could indicate that Emery might be a sister of Israel's first wife.
