[20479] James M. Scruggs wrote that Jeremiah was "a Quaker, came to Winchester from the Philadelphia area with a colony of Quakers, joining the Hopewell Meeting House from East Nottingham, PA Meeting House on 11 Aug 1774". He also reports speculation that Jeremiah is third in descent from a Cooper companion of William Penn who emigrated with Penn. He notes that a Joseph Cooper, perhaps Jeremiah's father, was a member of the Assembly at Burlington, NJ in 1727 and a friend of Benjamin Franklin, mentioned in his autobiography. A Jeremiah Cooper was married 4 Sept 1776 "by a hiring teacher" and therefore disowned by the Hopewell Friends Meeting, Frederick Co. VA - see "Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia ..., Volume 1," Joint Committee of Hopewell Friends and John Walter Wayland (Westminster, MD; Heritage Books, 2007), p. 501. A genealogy.com user posted 7 June 2000: "Researching ancestry of Jeremiah Cooper who went with a group of Quakers from East Nottingham, PA to Winchester, VA ca. early 1770's. In unknown order, he joined the Hopewell Meetinghouse on 11 Aug 1774 and ma. Rebecca Parrell, dau of Joseph Parrell and Sarah Turner, Winchester, VA." An unverified Cooper file in Ancestry.com in 2015 offers: "When Jeremiah Cooper was born in May 1762 in Buck[s, Co.], Pennsylvania, his father, William, was 35 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 29. He married Rebecca Perrill Parrell in 1776 in Frederick County, Virginia. They had 12 children in 22 years. He died on June 2, 1794, in Union, South Carolina, at the age of 32."
