"A History of Gorham, Maine," by Josiah Pierce (Portland, ME: 1862), p.177: "James Irish emigrated from Roxfordshire, England, about 1710, and located himself at Falmouth (Portland). He came to this town [Gorham] in 1738, and was among the first few settlers. ...Joseph and William [his sons] settled in Buckfield." Iona Raney gives his dates as ca. 1690 - ca. 1745, age 55; he died at Falmouth (Portland), Maine. Falmouth was founded in 1633 but destroyed by American Indians in 1676. Rebuilt in 1680, it was again destroyed in 1690. The settlers who escaped did not return; resettlement began by new immigrants about 1716, allowing the town to organize in 1719. James was among the pioneers who resettled Falmouth, arriving a single man and marrying in Maine by 1723. He was likely a member of the first church organized east of the Saco River on 7 March 1727 by the Rev. Thomas Smith. In 1738-40 James and Elizabeth took their family to Gorham (also known as Naragansett Number 7), ten miles west, settled just two years earlier. The place became known as Gorhamtown in honor of Capt. John Gorham. Cf. "History of Gorham, Maine," Hugh D. McLellan (Katharine B. Lewis, editor; Portland: Smith & Sale, 1903). Also see http://lthome.com/john-irish/text/000/page008.htm.
http://cowhampshire.blogharbor.com/blog/Genealogy/_archives/2006/7/13/2093787.html offers in 2007: ". . . according to the History of Gorham, Maine by Hugh McLellan, James Irish came from Boxfordshire, England about 1711 and settled in Falmouth (now Portland) Maine. The Maine Historical and Genealogical Recorder in Volume 1 states the year as 1710. He married after 1720 to Elizabeth --. She died at the age of 84 (year unknown). His death date is unknown. Between 1738 and 1740 he moved to Gorham and purchased of Capt. John Phinney one half of the hundred-acre lot No 85, which had been drawn to the right of No. 106, owned by John Pugsley, one of the original granters. James Irish remained in Gorham ME until the French and Indian War, when dangers forced him to move to a safer location.
Children of James & Elizabeth Irish:
1. John Irish, b. 13 Apr 1724; m. abt 1745 to Sarah --; resided Gorham ME, had children.

[4148] "The Old Lords of Raby," by John L. Low (booklet, 1879, used at Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, 5/87) states that Waltheof was (Saxon) Earl of Northumberland at the time the City of Durham was founded and resided at Bamburgh Castle where his son Uchtred stopped a major Scottish invasion of England. His name is given as Siward, Earl of Northumberland, Northumbria, Northampton and Huntingdon by Carr P. Collins, "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas, 1959, pp. 199-200). "The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" edition of 1961 indicates on a chart, p.218, that this person is "Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria beyond the Tees [river], probably descendant of the high-reeves of Bamburgh." Brian Thompsett of the University of Hull (http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/cgi-bin/gedlkup/n=royal?royal01771) gives his death as 1006 and his accession as ca. 965.
