[4580] The 1880 census apparently lists his family, with him as Postmaster at Anderson, IN (age 38, b. in OH) with wife Carrie (age 36, b. in OH) and children May (age 12) and Eugene (age 10), both b. in IN. He was a Corporal in Company G of the 75th Infantry on July 26, 1862; Transferred to Enginner Corps. July 29, 1864. He was Quarter Master Sergeant of the 1st US Vet Volunteer Engineers on July 29, 1864 from Co. G, 75th Inf., mustered out June 30, 1865. His obituary in The Anderson Herald 19 Aug 1916: "Stephen Metcalf, age seventy-four, a resident of Madison County sixty-two years, died at the family residence, 26 West Fourth Street, at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The will take place at the residence, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The service will be conducted by a member of the Christian Science church. Burial will be in Maplewood.----- Mr. Metcalf, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carrie M. Metcalf, and two children, Miss Ritta May Metcalf, of Anderson, and Dr. J.E. Metcalf, of Gary. Timothy Metcalf, a farmer of Boone Township, is a brother. Sisters also surviving are Mrs. D. K. Carver, of Indianapolis and Mrs. A. B. Carver, of Ohio, formerly of Alexandria. The late Mr. Metcalf was a civil war veteran and had been a school teacher, deputy Sheriff of Madison County, postmaster of Anderson seven years, publisher of The Anderson Herald several years, first secretary of the local street car line after electric power was applied, assisted Charles L. Henryin establishing the interurban system, doorkeeper of the House of Representatives at Washington two years, one of the founders of the Christian Science practitioner fifteen years past. Stephen Metcalf was born January 11, 1842, in Wayne county, Ohio. With his parents he moved to Boone township, Madison county, in 1854. After going through common schools he became of student at the Northwestern Christian University, now known as Butler College, and while he was a student in 1862, he enlisted in Company G, 75th Indiana volunteer infantry. He was a sergeant in Company G and during the last year of the civil war he was transferred to the First regiment of volunteer engineers. He became a quartermaster sergeant of the engineering corps to which he was assigned and served until June 29, 1865. Soon after returning form the civil war he taught school at various places until 1868, when he located on a farm in Boone township. He was married to Carrie M. Robb at Jersey, Ohio, on August 14, 1867. They moved to Anderson from Boone township in 1870, when Mr. Metcalf was appointed a deputy sheriff and served two years. He then purchased The Anderson Herald (from John O. Hardesty), of which he was publisher and editor until 1888. He was appointed postmaster of Anderson in 1878 and served until 1885. Mr. Metcalf was an assistant to Charles L. Henry when Mr. Henry bought the local street car line, enlarged the system and installed electric cars. Soon afterward while Mr. Metcalf was secretary of the Anderson Electric Street Railway Company, Mr. Henry organized the Union Traction system. In 1897 Mr. Metcalf was appointed a doorkeeper of the House of Representatives at Washington and served until March, 1899. He became interested during the winter of 1898 in Christian Science. He took up the practice of Christian Science as applied to healing in January, 1901, and he followed that profession until enfeebled in recent months. He was one of the founders of the local Christian Science church and was president of the church board several years. In politics, Mr. Metcalf was a firm Republican until the Progessive party was organized when he aligned with that party. Recently he announced his intention of supporting the Republican ticket at the coming election. Early in the summer he took short walks from his home. One of his last trips from home was two blocks away to witness the paving of North Delaware street. At that time he was talking with friends on the political situation and to one he remarked that he intended to write an article commending Charles E. Hughes for president. Mr. Metcalf suffered a relapse and was never able to finish the article he had planned. Mr. Metcalf was a charter member of Major May Post, Grand Army of the Republic, and he was a Past Commander of the Post. All members of Mr. Metcalfs immediate family were at the old homestead when Mr. Metcalf passed away. The son, Dr. Metcalf, president of the Gary board of health, with his family arrived from Gary on Friday."
