[2678] Maelgwyn, known as "Dragon of the Island", "killed a kinsman, left his throne to turn a monk, and later returned to the world." Strong memories of him persisted for generations. "His son Bridei created the strongest kingdom of the north, and his other son, Rhun, who succeeded him in Wales, was able to march his national army unopposed throughout the Pennines; and a century later, the national army destroyed Edwin of Northumbria. ...The middle ages knew him as the Gwledic, the supreme `ruler of the land', before the Welsh forever lost `England and the crown and sceptre of London.'" {-"The Age of Arthur", John Morris (Scribner's, 1973, pp.203-06)} See http://www.angelfire.com/ego/et_deo/welshkings.wps.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maelgwn_Hir_ap_Cadwallon
