[24680] See http://www.geneajourney.com/hntgfld.html (not verified). http://web.ukonline.co.uk/rosiegless/Horsford Castle/Castletext.htm offers: "Horsford Castle is a little known Motte and Bailey type castle to the east of the village of the same name. It is about 5 miles north of Norwich in Norfolk, England. As recently as 100 years ago, some interested parties felt that the site was too insignificant to have been a Norman castle, but it is now accepted as such. The story starts at the time of the conquest of England by William 1st (the Bastard or Conqueror according to your opinion of the Normans), in 1066. He granted a large number of lands in East Anglia to Robert Malet, who was then known as the Lord of Eye. In turn, Malet designated one Walter de Caen (latin- de Cadomensis) to hold the manor of Horsford for him, which was formerly held by the Englishman Edric. De Caen or de Cadamo, depending on the reference, apparently felt the need to provide a fortified retreat in the area, so he commissioned a small castle, in the quickly erected motte and bailey style. No doubt he would have had permission for this from his lord, Malet or perhaps the building was ordered by Lord Eye himself."
