"The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 2 March 2015":
Verona Island - Thomas Everett Carpenter, husband of Wendy Mercer Carpenter, passed away Feb. 21, 2015, at home on his beloved Verona Island. He was born June 7, 1948, the son of Roscoe E. Carpenter and Laura Bowden Carpenter.
Tom grew up in Orland, attended Orland Consolidated School and graduated from Bucksport High School. He earned an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology from the University of Maine. Returning to the university, he graduated with high distinction with a degree in business administration. His graduate degree in business was also from the University of Maine. It was during his time at Orono that Tom developed his lifelong love of Maine baseball. He was a longtime member of the board of directors for the Friends of Maine Baseball. When hockey was introduced, he started following the hockey team closely, also.
After moving to Verona Island in 1974, Tom took an active role in the community. He was a member of the School Board from 1984 to 2004, and was a Selectman for nearly 25 years, from 1990 to 2015.
In his professional career, Tom first worked for the Bangor CPA firm of Brooks and Carter. He then spent the next 35 years working as a CPA in Bucksport, most recently with the firm of Tate-Fitch. He felt that joining Tate-Fitch was the best career move he ever made, both professionally and personally. Over the years, many of his longtime clients became dear friends as well.
The amazing seasons of Maine meant that Tom could enjoy outdoor activities year round. Springtime camping and fishing trips to the Allagash Waterway were followed by summertime visits to camp at Mopang Lake. The fall meant going on moose hunts and staying at hunting camp in Dublois. Ice fishing back at Mopang in the winter brought the year full cycle.
Rescued Rottweilers was also an important part of Toms life. His last three family dogs were all adopted from a Rottweiler rescue organization. Please keep in mind adoption when thinking of adding an animal to your family.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Roscoe E. Carpenter, and his stepfather, Donald Ross. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, the love of his life, Wendy Mercer Carpenter, his mother, Laura Bowden Ross, brother Dennis Carpenter and his wife, Susan; sister, Cindy Aldrich, and her husband, Russell; sister-in-law Nancy Mercer-Dumas and her husband, Bob. He also leaves aunt Betty Bowden, cousins, and many loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Addie.
[58962] Martha is daughter of Albert Burnham Harvey (1824-1918) & Martha Hayes (1829-1911; m. 20 February 1848 in West Levant, Penobscot Co., ME).
