[22553] Richard Hughes (rhugh@earthlink.net) emailed to Wallace Nolin in 2000: " I just thought of a way that we can probably resolve the issue of the parentage of Nathaniel and Caleb. Your abstracts of the wills establishes that they are both sons of Sally McFann, daughter of Jean Sergeant, sister in law to Bartholomew Sergeant. You also state that Sally was executrix for Bartholomew's will. That means that somewhere in the document her place of residence will be stated. If it is Lancaster City, she is the wife of Aaron. If it is Martic Twp., then she is the wife of William." Nolin shared with Hughes: "Assuming for a time that Aaron was the father of this gang, I found in the will of Jean Sergeant written 28 January 1820, proven 21 February 1820 it mentioned her daughter, Sarah (Sally) McFann and her grandson, Nathaniel McFann (mine), her son, Bartholomew and his sister Sarah McFann. The will of Bartholomew Sergeant written 4 December 1821, proven 4 March 1822, mentions his siter, Sally McFann and her son, Caleb. Sally McFann is the exeecutrix of this estate. Parenthetically, Bartholomew Sergeant was the first spouse of Rachel Bruce, who a few years later married Nathaniel McFann (mine) and later moved to Wayne Co., OH. Ephraim Sergeant, Bartholomew's son, also came to Wayne Co., and raised a family here. Orphans Court. 18 September 1823 states that Caleb McFann, a minor (16), whose mother, Sally, has died, does not want his father as his guardian. The court granted the petition without being contested, and awared Caleb's guardianship to a neighbor." Hughes offered via email 30 July 2003: "I find that the 1820 will of Jean Sergent, mother of Sarah (Sally) Sergent, grandmother of Nathaniel McFann and Caleb McFann, states the she is from Martic twp and that the property she leaves is in Martic twp. The 1810 census shows that William McFann is in Martic twp. while Aaron McFann has moved to Lancaster City. Aaron McFann is still in Lancaster City in the 1820 census with a wife. Therefore Sally McFann is the wife of William. Also, the orphan court record showing Caleb requesting the court to appoint someone to be his guardian because his father is unfit has been verified by the county clerk (due to poor copy) as stating at the top left margin 'Wm McFann (not decd)'. He concurred that this must be Caleb's father."
