[44162] Maryetta is daughter of Heinrich B. Foose (1833-1907) & Susannah Shatto (1837-1895). "The Perry County Democrat [Bloomfield, PA], 14 January 1931," p. 3: "Mrs. James Rice died on Wednesday morning, January 7th, after an illness of three weeks' duration. Mrs. Rice had been in poor health for the past year but was not confined to her bed until three weeks before her death, which was due to a complication of diseases. Marietta Rice was the oldest daughter of Henry and Susan (Shatto) Foose, now deceased. She was born on her father's farm in Spring township, Sept. 15, 1861, and died Jan. 7, 1931, aged 69 years, 4 months and 14 days. She was united in marriage fifty years ago to James Rice, of Spring township. Their pastor, Rev. L. H. Aurand, of the Lutheran Church, performed the ceremony at the parsonage in Loysville. Mr. and Mrs. Rice then took up the occupation of farming, living on farms in Centre and Wheatfield townships, and also on their own farm in Spring township, near Alinda. To them were born fourteen children, twelve of whom with the aged and sorrowing husband and father survive. Two daughters, Huldah (Mrs. David Bolze) and Edna (Mrs. Calvin Dunkleberger) are deceased. Those who survive are Roy E. Rice, of Dellville; Elizabeth (Mrs. Luther Bolze, of Oak Grove; Alice (Mrs. Cloyd Dunkleberger), of Salunga; Harvey Rice, of Mt. Joy; Mabel (Mrs. .J. W. Beahn), of Chicago; Margaret (Mrs. David Bower), of Harrisburg; Frances (Mrs. Samuel George), of Dellville; Marietta (Mrs. William Ellerman), of Carlisle R. D.; William Rice, Dellville; Clark Rice, Alinda; Miss Julia Rice and George Rice, of Alinda. Forty grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive, also the following brothers and sisters: Ida (Mrs. Christian Grube), of Oyster Point, Lancaster county; Mrs. Phoebe Wallace, of Millersville; Walter Foose, of Lititz, Pa.; and Theodore Foose, of Freeport, Illinois. In the passing away of this highly esteemed lady the home and community have lost one whose whole life has been a living testimony of womanly graces, and now when her active, energetic, useful life is over it is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to this dear mother and wife, whose greatest joy was to make home a happy place for those so dear to her, and who was also a kind and helpful friend to all in need. As the poet has said: 'The loss of gold is great, The loss of love is more, But the loss of a wife and mother, Is a loss none can restore.' Mrs. Rice was possessed of charming personality and her sweet and pretty face reflected the pure and lovely soul within. . . .Mrs. Rice was a consistent member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church since her young womanhood and her pastor's selection of his text, 'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God,' was indeed most ap plicable for her funeral service. It can truly be said of Mrs. James Rice 'Servant of God, well done; Thy glorious warfare past; The battle's fought, the race is won, And thou art crowned at last.' The beautiful flowers which surrounded the casket and the large company of neighbors and friends who gathered to pay their last tribute of respect, attest to the love and esteem for the one who has gone. Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday at 1.30 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. G. C. Knipple. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The pallbearers were the five sons and one grandson of the deceased, namely, Roy, Harvey, William, Clark, George and Elmer Rice."
