"Descendants of William & Mary (Barrett) Dyer of Rhode Island" in RootsWeb in 2015 offers:
His children were listed incorrectly as children of "Anthony Dyer, Jr ." in Truro Baptisms, page 23. Jonathan Dyer went to Falmouth, Maine, with his family; there is nothing that fixes the exact date of his removal. He was there in 1757, as shown by the following from the Massachusetts Archives: "onathan Dyer [appears] in List dated Falmouth, April 12, 1757, of men enlisted under his Excellency John Earl of Loudon out of (Col.) Ezekiel Cushing's regt. and account of bounty advanced by said Cushing. "Said Dyer appears as having furnished Col. Cushing with 66:16s 8d to pay the bounty to the soldiers raised out of said Cushing's regt."Few men of that day in Falmouth would have been able to make a loan of 6 6. Money was scarce; yet Jonathan Dyer, like his father a shoemaker, was able to loan the government what was then a large amount. On Dec. 16, 1772, "Jonathan Dyer of Cape Elizabeth in the County of Cumberland . . . Cordwainer, in consideration of twenty four pounds, thirteen shillings & four pence Lawful money pa id . . . by Nathaniel Dyer of Cape Elizabeth aforesaid, Shipwright," sold to him "Seven Acres & Sixty four Roods of Land (exclusive of the Road which runs thro' said Land) lying in Cape Elizabeth aforesaid, and is the Southwesterly part of a ten Acre lot of Land whereon I now dwe ll . . . adjoining to Joseph Sawyer's land ." This sale of land "free of all incumbrances," witnessed by David Strout and Sarah Strout, was signed: "Jonathan Dyer" [seal]. It was customary for the wife to join in a deed conveying a part or the whole of the homestead. As Keturah Dyer did not sign the above, it is judged that she was not then living. There is no further record of Jonathan Dyer in Falmouth or Cape Elizabeth, though he is supposed to have died there. Not a child of his was recorded; yet, among the number of early Dyers in Cape Elizabeth who cannot be traced, he may have had other children besides the following. (Descendants of Edward Small )

INDEX

[8017] Irene is daughter of Ira Milton Henry and Clare Ellen McNaughton. Irene r. Baird Memorial Bldg., Second St., Newport, PA. Ancestry.com offers: "Henry Name Meaning - English and French: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements haim, heim ‘home’ + ric ‘power’, ‘ruler’, introduced to England by the Normans in the form Henri. During the Middle Ages this name became enormously popular in England and was borne by eight kings. Continental forms of the personal name were equally popular throughout Europe (German Heinrich, French Henri, Italian Enrico and Arrigo, Czech Jindrich, etc.). As an American family name, the English form Henry has absorbed patronymics and many other derivatives of this ancient name in continental European languages. (For forms, see Hanks and Hodges 1988.) In the period in which the majority of English surnames were formed, a common English vernacular form of the name was Harry, hence the surnames Harris (southern) and Harrison (northern). Official documents of the period normally used the Latinized form Henricus. In medieval times, English Henry absorbed an originally distinct Old English personal name that had hagan ‘hawthorn’. Compare Hain 2 as its first element, and there has also been confusion with Amery. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hInnéirghe ‘descendant of Innéirghe’, a byname based on éirghe ‘arising’. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Éinrí or Mac Einri, patronymics from the personal names Éinrí, Einri, Irish forms of Henry. It is also found as a variant of McEnery."

In 1923, when he was only 2 years old, and his mother was pregnant with his sister Marjorie, the family took a summer road trip from Seattle to North Carolina, leaving the day after school let out in June, spending one week with grandparents in N. Carolina, and returning just in time for school to start in the fall. There were no paved roads outside of cities at that time. The family camped in a canvas tent and slept on cots. Chuck's love for the outdoors, for traveling, and his fascination with cars were sealed for life on this trip!

He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1938 at the age of 16 and enrolled in Whitman College (Walla Walla, Washington) where he received a B.S. degree in Chemistry. While in Walla Walla he worked in the pea harvest, sang in the Whitman Glee Club, was a member of TKE fraternity, and developed a social consciousness as he saw Japanese friends be forced into internment camps. Charles became a conscientious objector to WWII.

In 1942 he entered Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut, to study for the ministry. While there he developed a close relationship with other ministerial students, and with their Theology Professor Roland Bainton, who was also a Whitman grad and from Eastern Washington. The summer after finishing at Yale, Charles worked on staff at Camp Pratt, a YMCA camp for inner city boys on Staten Island. It was there that he met Rita Rowe, from Norridgewock, Maine, who would become his bride and wife of 67 years. Together they maintained life-long friendships with classmates and friends who had also worked on staff at Camp Pratt that summer.

Chuck and Rita were married June 30, 1946 and settled into their first parsonage, in Aroostook Larger Parish, not far from the Canadian border in the potato country of Northern Maine. Chuck and one other minister served five tiny rural churches over a distance of about 1000 square miles. The Knapp's first child, Kristan, was born in 1948. Later that year they relocated to Dover-Foxcroft in Central Maine. Two more children were born there, Timothy and Andrew. Chuck applied himself to vegetable gardening, becoming a legendary producer of food for the family, especially his Kentucky Wonder green beans. During these years, The Knapps, who were always interested in cross-cultural exchange, hosted many foreign students in their home for holidays.

In 1955, the family packed everything into a cross-country moving van, and headed West in their new stripped down, basic brown 1955 Chevy, to settle in Almira, a wheat-farming town of 398, just south of Grand Coulee Dam in central Washington State. While living in Almira their fourth child, Jonathan, was born. The tiny Almira Community Church served everyone except the Lutherans who had the only other church building in town, and the Catholics who had to drive 12 miles to attend mass in a neighboring community. Chuck moved sprinklers and drove school bus to make ends meet. Along his bus route he spied the body of a 1924 Model "T" Ford rusting beside an old barn. He bought it for $1 and spent the next twenty years happily restoring it to original specifications and dependable running order. He used to joke that his antique car was the same age as his wife!

The next church Charles Knapp served (1961-65) was in Dayton, Washington, just 30 miles from Walla Walla, in a wheat-farming town that also had a Green Giant cannery employing migrant workers to harvest asparagus and Southern college boys to harvest peas. One of Chuck’s outreach projects was a drop-in community center at the church for the college boys who had come to town to work. He introduced them to a more tolerant and racially inclusive Christianity than many of them had previously encountered in their home states.

In spring 1965, after 20 years of parish ministry, Charles accepted a position as Director of Camp Menucha, a retreat in the Columbia River Gorge at Corbett, owned by First Presbyterian Church of Portland. His Yale classmate, Jack Merner, had recommended him for the job. It was a perfect fit for both Chuck and Rita. Over the next 12 years they developed the underused property into one of the busiest ecumenical conference centers in the region, attracting not only religious groups, but also non-profits in human services, the Arts, and the human potential movement. One of their proudest accomplishments was the founding of the Creative Arts Community, a gathering of artists to work in various disciplines to share, teach, and create together over a week or two. The program continues today, 47 years later. The Knapps enjoyed visiting Menucha two years ago during a Creative Arts summer session. At Menucha Charles mentored many young people who came to work there, introducing them to new ideas and opening doors to their potential growth.

During their years at Menucha Retreat & Conference Center, Chuck & Rita learned of their daughter's sexual orientation and identity as a lesbian. With Ann and Bill Shepherd, friends from First Presbyterian Church whose daughter Susie had also just 'come out' to them, they recognized a need and founded a support group for parents of gay people. Over time Parents of Gays evolved into PFLAG Portland. When the group first attempted to put a small classified ad into The Oregonian, they were refused with the excuse that The Oregonian was a 'family' paper. Chuck & Rita also developed and taught a curriculum for congregations in the United Church of Christ (UCC) to use in studying the idea of becoming Open & Affirming, a decision made by each congregation about consciously welcoming LGBT members. As Moderator of First Congregational UCC Portland, Charles Knapp led the consideration of this decision and in 1991, it became the first Open & Affirming congregation in the Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ. Chuck continued as a quiet, but steady UCC teacher/leader through the efforts to defeat Ballot Measure 9, personifying the 'straight, but not narrow' LGBT ally ideal.

By 1978 changes in leadership at First Presbyterian dictated another move for The Knapps . . . this time into Portland where they purchased their first home. Investing sweat equity they soon nearly doubled the square footage of their Mt. Tabor bungalow, also building raised garden beds and a rockery wall for Chuck’s veggies and Rita’s roses. Charles worked at this time as Building Superintendent at Floating Point Systems, an innovative computer company that was constantly on the move expanding and changing its physical plant. About 1992, he became the Gate Keeper and Volunteer Coordinator at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, when Rita took the position of Wedding Coordinator there. Although Chuck semi-retired about 2007, he continued as Rita’s Wedding Assistant, often personally cleaning the lawn of goose droppings before a wedding party arrived. At the Garden, he also performed wedding ceremonies and oversaw the physical set-up for many wedding parties until 2010 when Rita took time off for heart surgery.

Charles began to have problems swallowing about this time. He was diagnosed with throat dysphasia meaning that his muscles were not able to protect his airway from food or drink, and he developed aspiration pneumonia frequently. When he could not eat enough to maintain his weight, he opted to take nutrition via a feeding tube. For about 11 months before his death, he did not take anything by mouth. This was a challenge for him, but he never complained about how difficult his life had become.

Charles enjoyed reading books all his life, and was often moved by poetry, new hymns, or classical music. The last book he read was the biography of Pete Seeger, In His Own Words, told through letters Pete had written over the course of his entire life. Chuck was very excited about this book because it chronicles the era in which he also lived. A life-long lover of dance, Baroque music, and live theatre, Charles was surrounded by family and friends singing, reading poems, and telling stories as his soul peacefully departed this earth, returning to the Source of Love, and on to its next great adventure.

Charles is survived by Rita, his wife of 67 years, and daughter Kristan (partner Janna) of Portland, sons Timothy (Melodee) of Wilsonville, Andrew (Lo) of Salt Lake City, and Jonathan (Holly) of Seattle. Also surviving him are grandchildren Charlene (Brian) and their daughter Elliot Mize of Ellensburg, Washington, and Daniel (Angela) and their daughters Olivia and Zoey Knapp, of Wilsonville, Charles’ brother James Knapp of Wenatchee, Washington, brother-in-law Fred Jones of Pt. Angeles, Washington, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as his church family.
