Chappy served in the US Army with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II and married Anna K. Maxwell in 1945. Following her death in 1990, he married Catharine 'Cathy' Wilson. They spent many happy years traveling, volunteering with The Nature Conservancy, Cincinnati Nature Center and Museum Center and enjoying his 12 grandchildren.
