[24944] Dough Thompson reports (http://freespace.virgin.net/doug.thompson/BraoseWeb/index1.htm): "Bishop of Hereford from 1200 - 1215, Giles, along with other bishops, left England in 1208 when the Pope's interdict came into force. In 1213 Giles and Reginald turned to open war with King John and took the de Braose Lordships in Wales which John had confiscated on the death of their father in 1211. Giles returned to England with Archbishop Langton in 1214 and the situation in Wales was ratified by John (on payment of a fine in Oct 1215). Giles became the Lord of Brecon etc. He built the tower of Brecon Cathedral and is depicted in a window in the North aisle. Giles may also have built the tower of Hereford Cathedral. His effigy on the North side of the chancel holds a tower."

It is curious that a Freeborn H. Gardner was with the Mormon forces at the Battle of Crooked River, 25 October 1838 - see http://www.farwesthistory.com/forces.htm which reports "Freeborn H. Gardner also joined Patten's company and went as far as 'Bragg's place,' While there, 'I heard D. Patten lecturing the troops; heard him direct his men how to shoot to bring their guns up on a rise to their object, and hold their breath, and fire; and generally they would make a deadly shoot [sic].' But Gardner decided to turn back and didn't participate in the raid on Bogart. Benjamin Bragg's place was located in the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 11, township 55, range 29 [Correspondence & Orders, 133-134]." Crooked River is a tributary of the Missouri River in northwestern MO due west of central IL (see map at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymondfamily/BattleCrookedRiver.html). A Freeborn Gardner and a Simeon Gardner are on the list of those excommunicated by the Mormon Council 26 April 1839 (http://www.saintswithouthalos.com/m/390426.phtml).
Note that our Freeborn had a son, Freeborn, b. in 1841 in Brown Co., IL. Thelma Martin posted 11 July 2004 on ancestry com: "I found a Freeburn Gardner with a son named Freeburn born 1841 in Illinois in 1860 census for Dick Johnson Twp, Clay Co., Indiana; 1870 Freeburn and wife Jane Davis ( Daves) with daughter Cora B. 1 yr. in Brazile Twp, Clay Co , Indiana. Didn't find again until 1910 Freeborn with wife Mary (married 38 yrs which would be 1872) so divorced or Jane died between 1870 and 1872. son Harry aged 21 in 3rd Ward Traverse City, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. Freeborn and Mary in same place in 1920. I can send copies of census pages to your email if you would like. He was also in Union Army, Company M, 4th Cavalry Regiment, Indiana 28 July 1862 to 29 June 1865." The 1860 census shows Freeborn H. Gardner, 'lumber manufacturer', with real estate valued at $1650 and 'personal estate' valued at $150, born in Ohio, with a female (occupation "house keeper", probably his wife) whose name is indistinct (perhaps "Serrice")(b. in KY), and Freeborn, Jr. (age 18, b. in IL, a carpenter), Elizabeth (age 16, b. in IL, a "domestic"), William (age 9, b. in IN), Artimesa S (female, age 6, b. in IN) and Melissa (age 2, b. in IN). The 14 June 1880 federal census at Terre Haute, IN lists: F. Gardner (age 30, groceryman, b. in IN to parents b. in OH), wife Mary (34, b. in IN to parents b. in OH), Cory (daughter, 11) and Gertgrude (daughter - 7).
Julie Schopieray posted 9 Dec 2010 in en Forum: 'I found Freeborn Gardner, b. 1819 OH and his wife Levina b. 1819 in KY in the 1850 census in Vigo, Harrison Co. Ind. with children Martha age 11 b. MO; Freeborn age 9 b. IL; Elizabeth age 6 b. IL. Also listed in the household is a Simon Gardner, age 67 ( b. 1783 in NY) (Freeborn sr.'s father?) Then in 1860 in Clay Co. IN Brazil PO: Freeborn and Levina have additional children William age 9; Artemisa age 6, Melissa, age 2. Freeborn jr. was in Traverse City, Mi as early as 1884 (listed in city directory as a grocer) as well as 1900, 1910, 1920 census. Enlisted in co. M. 4th Indiana Cavalry on 28 June 1862 as a private, discharged at rank of full sergeant on 29 June 1865."
The 1850 federal census in Harrison Twp., Vigo Co., IN states Freeborn, age 31, was b. in KY.
