[31369] "The Leeds Times, 23 July 1887," p. 3: " The sudden death of Mr. J. W. Middleton, solicitor, on Saturday morning, has excited a considerable amount of regret, for the deceased gentleman's friends were numerous. Most of the last fortnight he had been occupied in London in connection with the case of the Leeds Estate, Building, and Investment Co., Limited against Shepherd. He returned to Leeds on Friday evening, and, after a call at the office, Calverley Chambers, walked to his home, Fairfield, Headingley. He spent some time with the members of his family, who saw nothing in his condition to lead them to think he was ailing, and about twelve o'clock he went to bed. Ten minutes or a quarter of an hour later he suddenly became ill, and before a doctor had time to reach the house he passed away. He was suffering from some internal weakness, believed to be the result of over-exertion. He consulted Mr. Jessop a week ago, and it is said that he was advised to rest for a while as soon as he could. That, however, was impossible while the action in London was pending. Deceased was the son of the late Mr. William Middleton, of Gipton, the head of the firm of Messrs. Middleton and Sons, solicitors. Mr. Middleton took a more than merely professional interest in the legal questions which came within the scope of his engagements. He wrote a pamphlet on the West Riding Registry Act, and was regarded as an authority on municipal law, conveyancing, and Chancery practice. Mr. Middleton was a staunch Conservative, and was election agent to Mr. Richard Dawson in the two contests in East Leeds in 1885 and 1886. He was an adept in photography, and an active member of the Leeds Philosophical Society. Socially, Mr. Middleton was one of the most companionable of men. He was a Churchman, leaves a widow and eight children, and was forty-eight years of age. Special reference was made to his demise at the Leeds Borough Police Court on Monday by Mr. Bruce, stipendiary magistrate, who said it was with deep regret he had learned the news. He did not think the loss of any one would be more severely felt than the loss of Mr. Middleton by those who had been acquainted with him. - Mr. H. A. Child, solicitor, concurred most sincerely with Mr. Bruce's remarks, and expressed it as his belief that the memory of Mr. Middleton and his very good qualities would long be cherished by his numerous friends in the profession. On Tuesday the remains were interred in the family vault, Chapel Allerton Church, there being a large attendance of mourners, private and public. Before the case of Leeds Estate Co. v. Shepard and others (in which the late Mr. Middleton was acting for one of the defendants) was resumed in the Chancery Court, before Justice Sterling, on Wednesday, Sir Henry James, Q.C. (for defendant Shepherd), rose and said that before proceeding he hoped his lordship would allow him to refer to an occurrence which had happened since the case was last adjourned. One of the defendants who had the advantage of the assistance of a member of the profession of great ability, and had the misfortune to lose his advisor (Mr. Middleton). That calamity fell upon him in a sad and sudden manner, and before proceeding with the consideration of this case the learned counsel said that he desired to express the sincere sympathy of everyone connected with the profession, as everyone who knew the deceased knew him to be a most high-minded and able man. - Sir Horace Davey, Q.C. (who appeared for the company), said he entirely concurred with Sir Henry James. - Justice Stirling said he deeply regretted the loss sustained by the profession, and sincerely sympathized with what had been given utterance to by the counsel in the case.
